"The 1969 Wildcat. With much more than just good looks for you to
talk about. There's a 430 cubic inch V8, for example. And a unique
suspension system. It's an engineering breakthrough that gives you
more stability without sacrificing Buick's traditional riding
comfort. As you guessed, the Wildcat is all new.It does a lot of
talking to you when you visit it in person. And you'll talk a lot
about it." Excerpted from a 1969 print ad.
For consignment, a 1969 Buick Wildcat Custom convertible showing
12,999 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title
exemption. In keeping with the brand's familial similarities, many
'69 models included a bold chrome bumper that did just underscore
the quad headlights, it framed it and the lights were moved
slightly inboard.
Exterior
This era's full sized Buicks are known for their long sweeping
panels and this one is no exception, broadcasting its two stage
Verde Dark Green over long doors and endless rear quarters and
extended overhangs. Side trim follows the curve of the wheel
openings and trails back, creating some dynamic visual motion to a
parked car. Faux fender vents add some sport to this two door
convertible as do the 15-inch Buick Rally wheels in period typical
75 series white walls. Up front, the fascia takes on a serious
profile with robust bumper points bookending inset headlights and
the grated grille, Buick's Tri-Shield leading the way on the nose.
Narrow tail lights span the width of the rear, artfully embedded in
a chrome frame from the bumper and another Buick shield. The white
canvas top is in very good condition as is the rest of the car with
imperfections noted as chips, inclusions, a ding in the bumper, and
a tape mark in a gap.
Interior
The handsome design of the doors include an aluminum dress plate,
polished trim that frames rib stitched white grain vinyl, and a
black carpeted lower insert and both doors present nicely. The
split bench also combines smooth and stitched panels of Pearl vinyl
and both front and rear are in great shape. Black takes over up
front beginning with the plastic steering wheel and the instrument
cluster featuring neatly organized boxes of gauges, warning lights
and switchgear. There's a vintage AM/FM radio in place along with an
Buick 8-track player while a Wildcat call out on the dash bearing a
slight resemblance to Dodge's Hellcat design! The wide floor is
covered in low pile black carpet and Buick branded mats front and
back, all in very nice shape. The sizable trunk is finished in gray
cloth panels and clean.
Drivetrain
If not for the modern battery and some chipped paint, you'd think
you were standing in a showroom in 1969 as the bay presents super
clean and original. We're looking at the 430ci V8 with a 4-barrel
carburetor and horsepower rating of a healthy 360. It's mated to
the venerable TH400 3-speed automatic transmission routing power to
the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.07 gears. Power brakes, power
steering, and air conditioning is on board.
Undercarriage
Super clean and solid underneath as well. Dual exhaust run through
stock style mufflers and terminates under the rear. Power drum
brakes are on all four wheels and suspension is noted as coil
springs at both ends with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
We roll this big Buick onto the test loop where it proves to run as
good as it looks! The power propels this heavy unit easily and the
car tracks straight and with no post and a big windshield, we have
good visibility. The rear power windows do not work from the front
master switch but do operate from the rear switches. We also note
the A/C not working. All other functions operate as they should.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
The once ubiquitous big Buicks were just about every working class
neighborhood across the country. Practical without being
ostentatious, they were used as family cars and daily drivers and
if you think parallel parking your Miata is tough, take a trip back
to the 60's and 70's. This is a stunning example of a now uncommon
model from 1969. Get your Buick Club of America application ready;
this one needs a home!
