"The Conquista package consisted of a striking paint and molding
treatment. The basic body color appears on the roof, and upper
portion of pickup box, lower body sides, and tailgate. The center
section of the body side, the hood and lower portion of the
tailgate are set off by a special accent color. Also featured are
bright paint break moldings along the upper side of pickup box, and
tailgate; bright moldings along lower side of body and over wheel
openings. The "Conquista" logo decal was located towards the right
hand lower portion of the tailgate on the 1978 model, and from 1979
& up they were relocated to the right hand upper portion of the
gate." Thx Elcohaulicssanonymous.com
For consignment, a 1987 Chevrolet El Camino Conquista with a title
verified 71,818 actual miles. This 305 four barrel car/truck
remains in rare, original condition, a stunning time capsule of a
bygone era and body style that needs to make a comeback!
Exterior
The distinctive two tone here is made up of Dark Chestnut Metallic
and Light Chestnut Metallic, giving off a shimmering glow from its
two stage application. The car side of the vehicle ends at the
canted rear quarter window that is reflected in the brown C-pillar
flowing seamlessly down to the bed, here flanked by side rails.
Each brown band is partnered with stainless trim which adds even
more layers to the two tone configuration, and the rear bumper
takes in the tail lights down low below the smooth tailgate with
its embedded plate. A solid rear window overlooks the soft tonneau
bed cover and flying buttresses 15-inch Chevrolet Sport wheels are
wrapped in 205/75R15 white wall tires and are adorned with a bowtie
on the red center cap. Overall, the body, paint and metalwork are
in great shape with few imperfections noted as some chips,
blistering at wheel openings and along a rocker, and some deplating
on the chrome bumper.
Interior
It may have an unusual shape on the outside, but the inside is
right out of the GM playbook, starting with the door panels in Fawn
vinyl and carpeted kick panels that could have been borrowed from
any Monte Carlo or Regal of the day, and both here are in great
shape with some minor crinkling of the plastic chrome trim. Fawn
velour buckets have tufted panels and extra side pillowing more for
comfort than support, and a center armrest stowed out of the way
when not in use or to make room for your significant other to
shimmy over. The quintessential 80's steering wheel leads to a
nicely appointed but basic gauge cluster, black on black with red
needles, white writing, and orange in places of caution, like at 55
mph. The center stack is the GM box with A/C levers over a Delco
AM/FM/Cassette player. With a column shifter, the floor is open and
covered in tan carpet which flows over the transmission hump and is
in nice condition. The felt headliner and visors are in great shape
while we note a few cracks in the dash pad. The bed is spotless and
covered with a fitted rubber mat.
Drivetrain
The bay is like a snapshot from 1987, clean and unmolested is a
305ci V8, rated at 150 horsepower and wearing a 4-barrel
carburetor. It's mated to a 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission
sending power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 2.56 gears. Power
brakes, power steering, and air conditioning are on board.
Undercarriage
Not quite as clean as the engine bay, but it's not dirty either. It
just has the typical surface rust and patina in a dry and mud free
environment. Here, a single exhaust travels through a stock style
muffler, the power brakes are divided as front disc and rear drum,
and suspension includes coil springs at both ends with a 4 link in
back.
Drive-Ability
The ultra comfortable interior feels like a familiar friend as we
roll this part car part truck around the test loop. Smog and
remnant malaise influence limits the horsepower but we have enough
to get us around in a perfectly acceptable manner and of course,
visibility is fantastic in the abbreviated cabin. We note the horn,
power locks, and A/C don't work but all other functions on this
well preserved El Camino work as they should. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
Using some of our 10th grade Spanish, we learned El Camino
translates to the path and Conquista means Conquest. So, if you're
ready to conquer the path ahead of you and do so in the now
legendary car/truck configuration that's been imitated but never
duplicated, pick up this Conquista and have yourself a collectible
with a bed!
