Conceived as a contemporary interpretation of the legendary 507,
the design of the BMW Z8 blended retro-inspired styling with
thoroughly modern construction and one of BMW Motorsport's finest
powertrains. Its aluminum spaceframe and bodywork wrapped around
the 4.9-liter S62 V8 borrowed from the E39 M5, paired exclusively
with a six-speed manual transmission. The result was a roadster
that blended effortless performance with the character and
involvement expected of BMW's finest sporting cars.
While the standard Z8 was already formidable, Dinan recognized
considerable untapped potential in the platform. Its S2 program
transformed the car without compromising the fundamental character
that made the Z8 so appealing, extracting additional performance
from the naturally aspirated S62 while sharpening the chassis to
match. Contemporary Dinan literature rated the S2-Z8 at 461
horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, placing it well above the
standard car while retaining the refinement and linear power
delivery that defined the original.
This example is especially distinctive, finished in BMW Hellrot
over a striking Crema and Black two-tone leather interior, a
combination understood to have been specified on just 15 Z8s.
Showing approximately 8,531 miles at the time of writing, it has
had just two owners and is further distinguished by its Dinan S2
conversion, serial no. S20426.
Far more than a simple software tune, the S2 package was conceived
as a coordinated performance upgrade. The conversion included Dinan
Stage 5 engine software, high-flow intake components, larger
throttle bodies and velocity stacks, lightened flywheel, exhaust
headers, a Stage 3 suspension system, a Quaife differential, Dinan
camber plates, and a short-shift arrangement. Together, these
changes sharpened throttle response, increased output, improved
cornering ability, and gave the Z8 a more focused character without
sacrificing its grand touring manners.
The intake and exhaust revisions allowed the S62 to breathe more
freely, while Dinan's engine management tied the package together.
Chassis upgrades were equally intentional, with revised springs and
adjustable anti-roll bars reducing body roll and improving turn-in
while preserving the ride quality expected of a road-going Z8. The
result is a car that feels meaningfully more urgent and responsive
while remaining faithful to the character of the factory
machine.
Importantly, the Dinan package was fitted in April of 2004 as
confirmed by receipts on file. After a visual inspection and
confirmation from Dinan, we have determined that this S2 has been
fitted with the revised exhaust headers that did not require
modification to the aluminum tub, leaving this example to be one of
a handful of Z8 S2's that never received the alteration.
The car is accompanied by its factory hardtop, Z8 owner's book,
additional books, fitted car cover, and period BMW telephone. Dinan
tuning invoices are also on file, providing valuable documentation
of the work performed and reinforcing the completeness of the car's
history. Lastly, important to note that accompanying the sale of
the car are the original components removed in favor of Dinan
parts.
The condition of the Z8 is consistent with what one would expect of
an 8,500-mile, 25-year-old car, offering bright paintwork, inviting
upholstery, and overall presentation of displaying that it has been
well cared for throughout its life.
With just 8,531 miles, two owners, a rare Hellrot over Crema/Black
specification, and Dinan S2 conversion, this Z8 stands apart from
the already limited production run. It combines the timeless appeal
of BMW's modern 507 homage with substantially enhanced performance
and chassis dynamics, making it a particularly compelling
interpretation of one of BMW's most celebrated modern
roadsters.
