In 1965, 40,522 Barracudas were produced and the styling that had
been in place for a few years would change for '66. According
toearlycuda.org, "Those upgrades came in the form of bigger, bolder
bumpers that eliminated the under bumper valance of '64-65, slab
sided front fenders and rear quarters, a more aggressive "French
fry cutter" grille and restyled tail lights with rectangular,
rather than round, back up lamps. Inside, in addition to changed
seats and vinyl trim, there was a new instrument cluster, (in the
old dash), featuring a built in tachometer, (Formula S only),
vacuum gauge and oil pressure gauge."
For consignment, a 1965 Plymouth Barracuda fastback showing 58,400
miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption
and faulty odometer. This car was born with the 273ci V8 and now
features a rebuilt 360 Magnum from the early 90's.
Exterior
Deep Purple Metallic in two stage form adorns this car which in the
right light, looks almost black! No Commando engine here, but we do
have white Formula S stripes over the purple traversing over the
center of the hood, roof and decklid. 14-inch Mopar Rally wheels in
front are matched with black painted steel wheels in back for an
aggressive, street racer profile. The rear tires are tucked up into
the opening as the epic fastback configuration shortens the
roofline via a sloping rear window and trim detail at its base. Out
back, vertical tail lights cant forward over round reverse lights
and a straight bumper while the split grille up front coordinates
the design with inboard round marker lights. Imperfections include
cracking, orange peel, chips, embedded water stains, and general
inclusions.
Interior
Glossy black door headers rise over black vinyl panels with ribbed
detail and a trio of stainless adornments along with the Barracuda
nameplate affixed to each panel. Handsome low back bucket seats are
up front with a blotch and some cracking on the driver's while all
others remain in good shape, sharing the horizontal pattern on the
inserts. The three spoke steering wheel has some cracks in the rim
and leads to a tidy and minimalistic instrument cluster, showing
nicely with the vent levers and an AM radio toward the center where
a triple gauge pod has been added. The black carpet is in good
shape and so is the headliner and smaller trunk area.
Drivetrain
The engine bay reveals the 360ci Magnum V8 with Edelbrock Performer
aluminum heads, 4-barrel carburetor and intake manifold. It's mated
to an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission sending power
to an 8 3/4" rear.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath as well with typical surface rust and
patina, along with the addition of subframe connectors to stiffen
things up. Suspension consists of torsion bars up front and leaf
springs in the back while the dual exhaust flows through an X-pipe,
then Thrush mufflers on its way to a discreet finale. Drum brakes
are noted on all four corners
Drive-Ability
The car is a quick starter and provides a smooth ride with adequate
power on the test loop. Visibility is very good and the car tracks
straight. Functionally speaking, the radio, tail lights, brake
lights, speedometer and odometer are not working. All other
operations work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
The Formula S call outs and stripes are a nice touch on this purple
Barracuda and there's no mistaking the unique shape and profile of
the model itself. There's plenty of power here to get this fish
from point A to point B with some spirited swimming and once your
friends see you in this deep purple fish, you'll be the real
highway star!
