1990 Chevrolet Corvette Callaway Twin Turbo Convertible
"The Callaway Twin-Turbo Corvette is quite simply one of the most
powerful automobiles ever certified for sale by the EPA. Its
turbocharged and intercooled 5.7 liter V8 puts out a staggering 382
horsepower-more power than any U.S. spec model currently sold by
Ferrari or Porsche. In fact, we know of only one U.S. market car
that can top the Callaway's formidable power rating: the
Lamborghini Countach, which belts out 425 hp. Even Chevrolet's
forthcoming Corvette ZR-1 will be hard pressed to outpower the
Callaway Twin-Turbo." Car and Driver, May 1989
For consignment, a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette Callaway Twin Turbo
convertible showing 29,820 miles, but the true miles are unknown.
This is a Bloomington Gold winner according to our consignor and
this is one of about 48 Callaways from 1990 with the Aerobody kit,
a $7,900 option.
Exterior
The dramatic presentation begins with gleaming Arctic White paint
which is handsomely contrasted by the red canvas top. The exterior
modification that defines the Callaway begins with a reworked nose
that includes a quartet of aggressive ducts. In profile, straked
openings replace the fender vents in the front and dress the marker
lights in back. Between them, unique 17-inch wheels with Callaway
center caps carry 275/45ZR17 tires with an early 2026 date code.
Fans of Callaways especially favor the tail treatment and its epic;
dual tail lights are converted to a single, oval lens giving the
car a space age appearance. Callaway is embossed in the cover and
below, a center exit exhaust mirrors two D-shaped tips in a
configuration that had to inspire the C5 design. Imperfections are
few on this low mileage classic and include some discoloration on
the red top, a few small chips, chin scrapes and a scuff on a front
marker.
Interior
The black mid panel of the red door panel on the driver's side is
countered by a fully red door on the other side and both present
cleanly. As do the red leather bucket seats with electric controls
in the side supports and tuck and roll inserts. Bright red carpet
floods the floor and the cargo area in back while branded mats fit
perfectly in the footwells. Up front, it's standard Corvette with
the arching instrument cluster and orange backlight, an integrated
screen to the right along with push button A/C panel and
AM/FM/Cassette and CD player. That's also where you'll find the
coveted Callaway plaque denoting this as car #22, right next to the
Callaway boost gauge. The center console holds the shifter of
course, and the signature of Reeves Callaway.
Drivetrain
The magic begins with the 5.7 liter L98 V8 to which Callaway adds a
pair of intercooled turbochargers thereby increasing the horsepower
to 390, astounding for the era. It's backed by a ZF 6-speed manual
transmission that routes power to the rear axle with 3.45 gears and
limited slip. The engine under the clamshell hood is equally clean
and impressive, with polished tubing and finned intercoolers
flanking the intake.
Undercarriage
Clean conditions are found underneath as we expected and it's here
we find tuned dual exhaust through a stainless steel system that
exist in the center. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and
suspension is fully independent and includes forged aluminum
components, transverse monoleaf springs, and stabilizer bars.
Drive-Ability
Your mind tells you it's a normal Corvette, but your ears and seat
of your pants tell you something else. The car sounds great, has
enormous power on hand, and of course, handles as if on rails. This
pampered example presents with all functional items operating as
they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Here's your opportunity to own a very special Corvette, a C4
Callaway that is a virtual legendary in the American sports car
world. Tuners come and go, but very few are regarded with the same
level of respect that Callaway demands. They're still around, of
course, turning mortal cars and trucks into something different,
but the Sledgehammer and the C4's remain the best known and the
notable genesis of the success.
