"During its 1970-71 production run, the T-37 was General Motors
lowest price midsize hardtop-good for fleet duty and budget
conscious drivers. The GT-37 was the performance variant of the
T-37, equipped with a Muncie 3 speed floor shifter, the GTO's
exhaust system, hood pins, rally wheels, and special badges and
stripes. In 1970, you had your choice of three Pontiac V8 engines,
the venerable Pontiac 350 with 255 horsepower, or a pair of 400s
rated at 265 or 345 hp. The GT-37 was a bonafide "sleeper" GTO,
giving Pontiac an affordable performance car."

For consignment, a 1972 Pontiac LeMans GT-37 2 door sedan tribute
showing 575 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Just 7,221 real
GT-37's were produced between '70 and '71 and this LeMans serves as
a faithful tribute to that uncommon model.
Exterior
GM's A-body design is on full display here with the long hood,
sloping rear, and short decklid, all bathed in two stage Granada
Gold paint. In '70, the stripe was as depicted here, across the
waist line, here in black bordered by red and white, following the
curvature of the back windows and extending across the fender. Hood
pins were part of the package but the Ram Air hood was purposely
left off; no harm in including here as it looks great. There's a
rear wing and the 15-inch Pontiac Rally II wheels are muted and
made slightly sinister with gray paint, some of it flaking. GT-37
badging is convincing for sure and the 400 on the rocker panel
appears in eye-catching red. We've got an added passenger side
mirror here and both sport mirrors present nicely in coordinated
black. Imperfections include a bend in a rim, chips, bubbling on
the A-pillar and various other locations throughout the car,
inclusions, orange peel, and filler evidence in places.
Interior
Open the doors to find nicely designed panels with diagonal
stitched vinyl, chrome trim lines, and a carpeted lower with both
doors presenting in very nice condition. Saddle vinyl also covers
the split bench in front and full bench in back in flawless
condition. A GT sport steering wheel fronts the instrument cluster
with woodgrain overlay surrounding three main ports containing the
gauges that includes a tachometer with the mid panel being treated
with spun aluminum coverage, a design Pontiac would continue to use
for performance cars going forward. There's no radio but there is
an added triple gauge pod under the dash, not far from the Mr.
Gasket shifter on the tunnel over gold twist carpet and black
weather mats. The perforated headliner is in nice shape and the
trunk is relatively clean.
Drivetrain
Driver quality conditions are found under the hood where a 400ci V8
resides. The '75-'76 unit has 4X heads and a Holley 4-barrel
carburetor under the Edelbrock air cleaner. It's mated to a TH350
3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt
rear axle. Power brakes and power steering is on board.
Undercarriage
It's driver quality here with plenty of patina, surface rust, and
painted over rust holes on the passenger door bottom. Dual exhaust
runs through FlowMaster mufflers and exits through twin splitters
in back. Power disc brakes in front are matched with power drums in
back and suspension includes coil springs front and rear with a 4
link in back.
Drive-Ability
This Poncho starts, idles and runs just fine and we lap the test
loop to check functionality where the car proves to have decent
power underfoot and a pleasing exhaust note. The heater blower and
turn signals are not working but all other functions operate as
they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
The brochure read, "If you're after the response of a GTO but
you're willing to sacrifice some of the frills, remember this code:
GT-37". This model reminds us of the T-Type to the Grand National;
all the performance without the flashy looks. This tribute reminds
us of an uncommon model that existed and provides some visual cues
of what you would have picked up if you check the right RPO
code.
