"Biscayne's three budgeteers give buyers plenty to go for without
going out on a limb in price. Outside, bold new styling of fenders,
bumpers and grille; distinctive ornamentation and nameplates.
Inside, new instrument panel cluster and ornamentation, new
steering wheel and handsome new pattern cloth and vinyl trim. Roomy
passenger compartment has foam cushioned front seat, color keyed
deep twist carpeting, padded instrument panel and sun visors, seat
belts and ashtrays for the front and rear." From the 1966 sales
brochure.
For consignment, a 1966 Chevrolet Biscayne 2 door sedan showing
84,486 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a VA title
exemption. This big bodied beauty got our attention right away and
then delivered a dynamic exhaust tone denoting the 550 horsepower
it now packs under the hood.
Exterior
Receiving a repaint in 2025, the owner chose to keep the original
color, Willow Green, this time in modern two stage application and
the fantastic, period color highlights the subtle body bends and
contouring sheet metal nicely. In profile, it's one long panel
after another and the rear quarter and overhang are considerable,
capped by conservative tail lights and a clean, straight bumper. Up
front, the grille is immaculate and this bumper contours to the
fenders and wraps around giving the front a strong presence.
Staggered size tires give the car a slight rake and they're mounted
on 15-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels which hint at the
muscle under the skin. The body, paint and metalwork are near
perfect but our illustrious photographer finds some minor flaws.
Inclusions, some obvious filler at the C-pillar, a few chips, small
filler craters, and scuffs and dullness on the front bumper
apron.
Interior
Fawn vinyl and straight lined chrome trim dresses the inner doors
and both show nicely with some flaking of the chrome film on the
trim noted. Period style material was found in Oregon by our
consignor and the plaid design is exactly how we remember it!
Clean, linear fawn vinyl frames it and other than a few small
scuffs, both the front split and rear bench look great. Not much
veers from 1966 up front with proper patina on the steering wheel
and a horizontal speedometer in front along with an AM radio. A
tach now lives on the column and a twin gauge pod is suspended from
the dash. A Hurst shifter rises from the tunnel over tan twist
carpet, all under a very nice tan headliner. The trunk is barren
and wears the proper spatter paint.
Drivetrain
Go big or go home, and that's just what our consignor did with a
496ci V8 which is a Blueprint motor putting out 479 dyno proven
horsepower. It has an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and Quickfuel
4-barrel carburetor feed the fuel and a Tremec TR3550 5-speed
manual sends power to the 12 bolt rear with 3.42 gears and
Positraction. Headers and power brakes are on board and a Borgeson
Quick Ratio power steering box makes turning this behemoth a piece
of cake!
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with typical patina and a dry environment. The
dual exhaust runs through Turbo mufflers and then dump under the
car. Power disc brakes are up front and power drums are out back.
Suspension includes coil springs at both ends with a 4 link and a
panhard bar helping in back. Our consignor notes heavy duty
U-joints can be found here as well.
Drive-Ability
This green machine rolls with authority onto the test loop and
demonstrates obvious power underfoot, but we won't be flogging it
because our rear tires, the ones most likely to spin, are 20 years
old. In the meantime, she tracks straight, brakes well, and handles
like butter. And bonus, all functions operate as they should as we
roar back to the mall to find a showroom spot. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
Oh sure, some will yearn for a Caprice or Impala, but one look at
this Biscayne and all your dreams will come true as it's
essentially the same body style, this time with a color keyed post,
and a nice build that will absolutely impress. Yes, they will be
green with envy!
