1989 Chevrolet Corvette Callaway Twin Turbo Convertible
Starting in 1987, the Callaway Twin Turbo package could be ordered
from select Chevrolet dealers under Regular Production Option,
(RPO), code B2K. The B2K package cost $19,995 on top of the cost of
a standard Corvette, resulting in an out the door price of
approximately $50,000. Best of all, it was supported by GM's
standard warranty, exactly like a regular Corvette. During the five
year production run, there were less than 500 examples
produced.
For consignment, a 1989 Chevrolet Corvette Callaway twin turbo
convertible showing 6,467 miles, but the true miles are unknown.
About 68 twin turbo Callaway Corvettes were produced in 1989 and
only 25 of them were convertibles.
Exterior
This stunning spec begins with Corvette's renowned Nassau Blue
Metallic which is complemented by the white canvas top, but we're
guessing this will be reserved for top down weather and we don't
blame you if you want to stow it away! The Aerobody kit adds
aggressive ribbed openings and a smooth front fascia with
aggressive looking ducts on the nose, all in an effort to lower the
drag coefficient. When you blow by cars on the road, they're going
to get a quick look at the fantastic treatment that changes the
inset tail lights to outward oval units with convex demarcation for
the lights. Twin exhaust tips exit below the center of the rear
bumper and 17-inch wheels carry 285/40ZR17 tires with an early 2022
date code. Imperfections are hard to come by but include a scratch,
some inclusions, a stain on the white top, and a single chip.
Interior
The clean door panels are a mix of plastic, vinyl and carpet in
varying shades of blending blue along with typical black switchgear
and hardware. Bright Blue leather covers the bucket seats and even
the seat belts match. We note some wear on the entry point of the
driver's seat but otherwise the high and supportive buckets are in
nice shape. Up front, it's the original C4 steering wheel and
dashboard with arching green digital displays just before Chevrolet
went to a more analog configuration in 1990. The center stack
contains the status computer along Callaway's boost gauge, an AM/FM
radio, the A/C panel and the exclusive Callaway Twin Turbo emblem.
A wide center console houses the shifter and the Callaway plate
that shows this is car #002. Bright blue carpet covers the
footwells and cargo area, both places including black carpeted mats
on top.
Drivetrain
This engineering marvel makes itself known with skyward facing twin
intercoolers on each side of the 5.7 liter L98's intake plenum and
the Mobil 1 branding adds to their race inspired credibility. This
powerplant puts out 382 horsepower during an era when mere mortal
Vettes were putting out about 245. This one is equipped with a
700R4 4-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the
limited slip rear axle with 2.59 gears. The bay presents cleanly
with some added blue features including the wires, compressor hose
inlet, and intercooler rubber hose connections.
Undercarriage
Fantastically clean underneath with a dual exhaust system that
lacks mufflers and is stainless steel from the cats back,
concluding at the twin tips with center exit. Power disc brakes are
on board and the fully independent suspension is a complex
compilation of aluminum and steel components with each end
featuring a monoleaf spring and steel stabilizer.
Drive-Ability
Our short jaunt around the test loop proves that Callaway meant
business when they beefed up the fairly potent factory 5.7. You
won't miss shifting in this one as both hands will comfortably and
gratefully grab the steering wheel. Power, handling, tracking and
braking all in the positive column and all functions on this nice
example, with the exception of the up and down driver's power
mirror function, work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
If you've always wanted to feel the wind in your hair and have a
view of the sky while motoring, carving canyons, or cruising the
Pacific Coast Highway, we can't think of a better vehicle for your
desires than a Nassau Blue convertible Callaway Corvette!
Collectible, rare, and wildly fun.
