Before the Grand National became one of the most feared American
performance cars of the 1980s, Buick was already proving that a
turbocharged V6 could challenge traditional V8 muscle. The 1984
Buick Grand National introduced the model's famous all-black look,
and with only 2,000 produced that year, these early examples are an
important part of Buick performance history.
Under the hood is the turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 paired with a
TH200-4R four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. A
10-bolt rear end with 3.42 gears puts the turbocharged power to the
pavement, while dual Flowmaster exhaust gives this V6 Buick a
distinctive sound. Recent mechanical work includes new suspension
components, brakes, exhaust, belts, a full tune-up, and a 1987-spec
camshaft.
The traditional black exterior gives this 1984 Grand National its
unmistakable presence. Factory-style 15-inch Grand National turbine
wheels wear Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires, preserving the muscular
appearance that helped define Buick's turbocharged performance
era.
Inside, the two-tone Light Sand and Gray leather-and-cloth interior
offers a welcome contrast to the dark exterior. Bucket seats, a
center console with floor shifter, and analog instrumentation
featuring a boost gauge and tachometer give the cabin a purposeful
feel. Power windows, power locks, electronic cruise control, tilt
steering, air conditioning, rear window defogger, and a Delco AM/FM
cassette stereo with digital display provide plenty of period
comfort.
The Buick Grand National earned its reputation by taking a
different approach to American performance. With its limited
first-year production, turbocharged V6, and recent mechanical
attention, this example captures the early days of a nameplate that
would become legendary among muscle car enthusiasts!
