The 1969 Corvette has made a few notable film appearances. Who
could forget the gold convertible that ended up in a lake in 1971's
Billy Jack? The original Gone in 60 Seconds, (1974), featured one
among the stolen cars. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's opening
scene features a '69 coupe in front of the Playboy mansion, not
unironically.
For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette convertible showing
1,341 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This 427ci/400hp car
retains its numbers matching drivetrain and comes to you with the
window sticker. Of the 16,233 convertibles produced, 7,878 buyers
opted for the accessory hardtop and of them, 3,266 chose the vinyl
covered option. As per the window sticker, the hardtop has been a
day 2 add on.
Exterior
It's estimated that just 7.7% of 1969 Corvettes were Can-Am White
and it suits the curvaceous lines of our '69 well. A wonderful
attribute of the white is its ability to serve as a base for
dramatic contrasts such as what we see in the fender gills, the
black top, and of course, the tires themselves. The thinly finned
15-inch turbine wheel covers resemble wire wheels from afar and are
iconically linked with the early C3's, here with redline 70 series
tires. The vented and flat decklid smoothly transitions to a subtle
spoiler, and the flat rear fascia presents sports car muscularity
that is truly legendary, bolstered greatly by the side pipes and
their ribbed heat shields. A tight and tear free black canvas soft
top resides under the rear hatch cover and presents with a slightly
hazy plastic rear window. The 427 hood is nothing short of
legendary. Cosmetically, imperfections include heavy crazing
throughout, cracks in the fiberglass at wheel openings and spoiler,
chips, scratches, wear on the hardtop's vinyl, off color touch ups,
rock spray, and chin scrapes.
Interior
This white Vette has black guts, beginning on the robust door
panels which present very nicely and lead to clean vinyl bucket
seats where the passenger's shows tears on the seat bottom. The
black steering wheel is on a black column that tracks down to the
black plastic surround of the gauges under a black dash pad. The
center stack houses five gauges, including a clock, and an
AM/FM/Cassette radio followed by a row of lights indicating left
and right lamps, then vent controls that include thumb wheels.
Finally, we have the shifter and the informational fact filled face
plate reminding you of your horsepower and displacement. The black
carpet is consistent with overall interior condition showing slight
age throughout.
Drivetrain
The numbers matching 427ci L68 V8 is dressed in chrome and ready to
go! It puts out 400 horsepower and is fueled via the correct three
2-barrel carburetors. Taking the power handoff is the numbers
matching Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission that sends power to
the heavy duty rear axle with 3.36 gears and Positraction. Power
steering is noted and the bay presents cleanly.
Undercarriage
We have driver quality conditions underneath with some typical
oxidation, residual oil, surface rust, and invasive rust on the
lower area of the radiator support. For components, we have dual
exhaust that become the iconic sidepipes and four wheel disc brakes
on board. The fully independent suspension with frame anchored
differential unit and transverse leaf springs help keep the rear
planted.
Drive-Ability
The first thing we notice when taking a seat is that spectacular
hood, its vented and bulging proportions. We pilot this American
legend to the test loop. The car provides good power and a nice
exhaust note while tracking straight and turning with ease. We note
the odometer and trip odometer, and wipers not working but the
wiper cowl does open, the brakes are a bit soft and it's hard to
put into second gear. Beyond these things, all functions on this
desirable collectible work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Fun in the sun awaits with the numbers matching 427 powered
Chevrolet Corvette. It's the king of the hill and a rare find; just
2,027 427ci/400hp Corvettes were produced in 1969, about 5% of
total production. Two tops, three carburetors, and four gears. You
can't go wrong!
