Originally used as the designation for a special pillarless hardtop variant of the Roadmaster in 1949 and then on several subsequent models, Buick introduced a dedicated Riviera model for 1963. Intended to compete with the Ford Thunderbird and Chrysler 300C in the burgeoning "personal luxury car" market, the Riviera debuted with stunning styling, a luxurious interior, and a limited availability of 40,000 units for its first year. For 1966, the Riviera entered its second generation with a redesign ditching the sharp, razor-edge look of the earlier models for a muscular, fastback silhouette featuring hideaway headlights tucked neatly inside a massive chrome grille.

Once again offered with a 425ci V8, performance was more than satisfactory as was comfort. The Gran Sport package, first introduced in 1965 as a performance package and continued to the new Riviera, included a dual exhaust, stiffer suspension, and a 'Positraction' limited-slip differential for 1966. Sales for the year were a new record: 45,308 - though only 5,718 were ordered as Gran Sports, and the Riviera continued as a nameplate through 1999. Today, the second-generation cars are noted for their distinctive styling and impressive driving dynamics which are likened to a slightly larger and softer GTO.

The magnificent 1966 Buick Riviera Gran Sport Coupe featured here is finished in its stunning factory all-Black color scheme of Black over an impeccably kept Black interior. This investment-grade Riviera Gran Sport is among one of the nicest examples we've seen in some time. Fitted with many options, this Riviera's rare color combination, and impeccable condition make this the perfect example to add to any premier collection. We are proud to offer this extremely desirable Riviera Gran Sport to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires only the very best an investment price!
