Strip away the Lamborghini Countach's myriad details, and what
remains is Carrozzeria Bertone's unmistakable wedge in its most
unadulterated form. This was the basis of the United Nude "Lo Res"
Concept Car, a drivable work of art designed to imitate the
silhouette of the Marcello Gandini-penned 1980s heartthrob. The Lo
Res Concept was created by Rem D. Koolhaas, CEO of the United Nude
footwear company, as a radical reinterpretation of the Countach but
reduced to its purest geometric form. The result, launched in 2015,
was simply striking and seemingly otherworldly; a dodecahedral mass
of tinted polycarbonate panels.
Yet the Lo Res Car is indeed a real working automobile, powered by
a 5-kilowatt KDS electric motor paired with a single-speed
transmission that drives the rear wheels. Though not road-legal, it
can reach speeds of up to approximately 30 mph. Its electrically
operated clamshell reveals tandem seating for two, with its tinted
bodywork offering immersive one-way views out of the futuristic
cockpit while thoroughly shielding any interior details from
outside eyes, making the Lo Res car appear even more alien. The Lo
Res Car immediately attracted international attention upon its 2016
debut, receiving extensive press coverage and winning that year's
Wallpaper* Design Award.
United Nude claims that four chassis were constructed, but the Lo
Res Car offered here, chassis 003, is believed to be the only fully
completed prototype according to the consignor. Regardless, this
example has certainly left a lo-poly imprint on both automotive and
pop culture. Chassis number 003 was notably featured in the music
video for "New Freezer" by Rich the Kid featuring Kendrick Lamar,
and is believed to be the example that appears in several other
popular music videos, including "Spaceman" by Nick Jonas, "Too
Much" by Marshmello and Imanbek featuring Usher, and "GANG GANG" by
JackBoys (led by Travis Scott).
In June 2019, chassis no. 003 was donated by the Leonardo DiCaprio
Foundation to the nonprofit organization Energy Independence Now,
according to the accompanying donation letter. The Lo Res Car was
subsequently displayed in the "Disruptors" exhibit at the Petersen
Automotive Museum and has primarily been housed in the museum's
Vault since 2020. It was displayed again in the Petersen's "The
Wedge Revolution" exhibit from August 2025 to July 2026, where it
joined many of the most significant wedge-shaped cars ever
built.
After a decade in the limelight, this 2018 United Nude Lo Res
Concept Car now awaits a new custodian to determine its next
chapter. Whether showcased at a world-class concours or a premier
design exhibition, the Lo Res Car is certain to command admiration
wherever it is presented, as it has throughout its storied
life.
