Mercedes-Benz E-Klasse 500E W124, 1991. Three owners, 239,000
km.
Porsche had the 928. BMW had the M5, and shouted about it from the
rooftops. And Mercedes? Mercedes said nothing. They simply built
the fastest four-door of its era, bolted on a modest little badge,
and left it to those in the know to work out what was really hiding
beneath that bodywork.
Because in the early '90s, Mercedes-Benz wanted to build something
that could loosen the prim and proper W124's tie without the
neighbours ever noticing. A saloon that nudged past 250 km/h, yet
in which your gran could settle into the back seat without a word
of complaint. The problem: Mercedes didn't have the room for it
themselves. The 5.0-litre V8 from the SL wouldn't simply slot
between the wheel arches of an ordinary W124. So they knocked on
the door of their neighbour in Zuffenhausen. And that is how the
500E, the real one, the original, came to be built largely by hand
in Porsche's factory halls. A Mercedes, assembled by Porsche, that
was faster than many a Porsche. If that isn't a plot twist straight
out of a film, then I don't know what is.
The story continues on our website, where the full file is kept as
well. 66 photographs. The service history, scanned in full. The
Carfax report. Paint thickness measured panel by panel. The
original factory brochure to page through. A timeline from 23
December 1991 to today, with every owner and the mileage year by
year in a single graph.
