"For their 50 year anniversary, Buick put many features into the
1953 Buick special Deluxe Sedan. Power steering was introduced to
the Special series. The hood opened at the front, not the side.
Higher horsepower, high visibility, new instrument panel, heavier
frame and so on. A well equipped model 41D could be much more
luxurious than a 1952 Super or Roadmaster." Hometownbuick.com
For consignment, a 1953 Buick Special Deluxe 2 door sedan showing
21,455 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title
exemption. This native of the Pinelands was subject to a frame off
restoration that began in 2008 and was completed in 2018. Of note
is the 5000 pound trailer hitch mounted behind the license plate
and 2 large binders of build information and receipts. Let's see
what else this road proven Special is packing.
Exterior
Dramatic and bold, this 2 door is draped in two stage Dynamic Red
Metallic borrowed from the Ford color palette, and its profile is
greatly enhanced with a wide sweeping bit of stainless trim that
simply pops with vibrancy. It doesn't hurt that three ventiports
live on the front fender, there's stainless trim around the cabin
and window reveals, and that the 15-inch polished slot style wheels
all pick up the accenting trim. This all creates a clean and well
coordinated design and the raked stance is helped by the staggered
size tires front and back. The massive "teeth" of the front grille
are brought to the forefront as the frame of the grille is painted
red and the normally large and ornate bumper has been replaced with
a more streamline design that doesn't steal attention from the
grille, even as it's very nice! Our decklid has been shaved, there
are no bolt caps on the bumper, and the headlight panel have been
smoothed and provided with clean, red lenses. Imperfections include
rock chips peppering the front, scratches, inclusions, clear runs,
and scuffs.
Interior
The conservative original design of the door panels is still
evident, but has been bolstered with a redo using Saddle leather,
padding, and a brown window frame and both doors present in show
ready condition. That continues to the lovely split bench, also in
saddle leather as well as the full bench in back and surrounding
walls. While we're talking leather, let's jump to the fully
finished trunk which combines it with black carpet that tracks over
the wheel wells with some fine attention to detail. Back inside,
the brown we see on the doors continues on the steering wheel, tilt
column and dash that retains a vintage style with a glossy finish.
The central grille and demarcated knobs look spectacular while a
neon blue AM/FM/CD radio under the dash reminds us we're in modern
times and is nicely integrated. Black carpet on the floor is
trimmed in saddle and a crushed leather headliner is in perfect
condition.
Drivetrain
The wow factor continues under the hood where a fully chromed and
polished 402ci Jasper V8 resides with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor
and an Edelbrock intake. Behind it is a 700R4 4-speed automatic
transmission with 4L65E internals and a Transgo 2-3 shift kit.
Headers, power brakes, power steering, and air conditioning are on
board and the car runs on a 12 volt system.
Undercarriage
You might not be as overwhelmed with the underside, but it is
clean, solid, and mostly dry with only some residual oil about. We
also note some rust on the bottom of the driver's door. Meanwhile,
dual exhaust flows through glasspack style mufflers and power
brakes are on board as front disc and rear drum. Coil springs are
at both ends and a 4 link is connected in the back. The trailer
hitch is stealthily mounted to the back and painted uniformly flat
black.
Drive-Ability
Yes, it runs as well as it looks, providing good power on the test
loop and handling well through turns and on straightaways. With so
much obvious thought and care put into this car, not to mention
time, we're not surprised that every function operates as it
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A long detailed list of parts used in this build will accompany the
car and our consignor tells us the car has been to Florida,
Minnesota, Syracuse, and a few trips to NJ indicating a well built
and dependable street rod. We see it as a winning turnkey
opportunity!
