"The Galaxie 500 convertible is an action car and looks good in
every line. The new roofline is lower; the new windshield is set at
a more rakish angle; the styling influence of Thunderbird is
unmistakable. Under way, the performance promise is brilliantly
fulfilled. With Thunderbird V8 thrust up to 405hp, the convertible
can put you in full charge of a bundle of blazing action! Top up,
the waterproof vinyl 3 ply top is secure to each roof bow to hold
the top snug and sleek as you drive. Top down, it disappears
smoothly under the tailored, color keyed boot. These are just a few
of the 'goodies' awaiting you in the 500 convertible." From the
1963 sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible showing 43,210
miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption.
Owned by our consignor for 25 years prior to which the previous
owner installed a crate 390. This clean Galaxie is out of this
world!
Exterior
What strikes us first about this Heritage Burgundy example is how,
with the top down, how incredibly straight the shoulder line is,
underscored and accentuated by a wide band of trim that wraps
around at the tail light and heads back up the car to form a spear
on the door. The windshield sticks up like a shark fin behind the
long, straight hood and even longer decklid. There's both a front
and rear grille in matching stamped stainless and while quad
headlights live up front, Ford's epic afterburner tail lights cap
the back and dictate the subtle curvature of the rear fenders.
Straight lines return as a chrome bumper and on the hood, front
fender ornaments rise like tiny sails guiding this ship. The black
canvas top and big rear plastic window are in good shape and
14-inch wheels wear wire wheel covers and mock knock offs.
Imperfections in the two stage paint includes some chips,
scratches, inclusions, scuffs, light bubbling, deplating chrome on
the bumper, and touched up chips.
Interior
The silver trim lines of the doors shows some patina but the black
vinyl that dominates the panels is in great shape and presents with
a handsome design. The split bench in front and the full bench in
back share the same black grain vinyl, white piping, and
ornamentation on the upper sections and all are in very nice
condition. The ribbed black plastic steering wheel lacks any cracks
and heads up the control center that includes the original
configuration of the dash with horizontal speedometer flanked by
circular gauges with a ribbed filler piece over a metal back bank
of knobs. The AM radio is still in place right next to the vent
panel and an elegant little clock as well. Black carpet fills the
floor and a cut to fit vinyl mat dresses the otherwise barren trunk
with a spare and jack in place.
Drivetrain
The clean engine bay holds a 390ci V8 with 300 horsepower and an
Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor over an Edelbrock intake. Behind it
is a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission routing power to
the Ford 9" in back with 3.00 gears. Power steering, power brakes,
and headers are on board.
Undercarriage
Clean and driver quality underneath with typical surface rust and
patina, some residual oil, and areas of plate repairs on the frame
on the otherwise stock looking underside. Dual exhaust runs through
resonator style mufflers to Cherrybomb mufflers which emit short
tips out back. Power drum brakes are on all four wheels and
suspension is standard with coil springs in front and leaf springs
in back.
Drive-Ability
There's not much that can go wrong on this former commuter car from
the 60's and we find a well running machine with decent power
underfoot, a clean interior, and straight tracking on the test
loop. All functions afforded driver and passengers operate as they
should and we cruise this one back to the showroom. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
And cruising is what this car does best. Top up or top down, this
long car with pure 60's style presents in mostly original and stock
configuration. It's a real time capsule of a time when Detroit
ruled the road. This one was produced at the Mahwah, New Jersey
plant and is ready and willing to travel anywhere in the world for
its next caretaker!
