"Busy trade and bustling traffic call for these 1953 Chevrolet
truck advantages. One of the toughest jobs any truck can tackle is
moving America's goods from terminal to market. Tight loading
schedules call for complete dependability. Ease of handling is a
must. Stamina, power and economy are needed to make deliveries
within close limits of time and cost. Now, in 1953, Chevrolet
trucks are even better equipped to handle any job. For these are
the ruggedest Chevrolet trucks ever built." From a 1953 print
ad.
For consignment, a 1953 Chevrolet 3100 ton pickup with a title
verified 39,358 actual miles. We're told this was originally a
Texas truck where the climate is dryer and judging from the
underside, this truck is a beneficiary of that weather!
Exterior
We're told by our consignor that this is a clean driver, and
looking at it, we have to agree. But that doesn't mean it's not
nice! Mostly straight panels are bathed in single stage Windsor
Blue paint and after all, straight panels are half the battle! The
tailgate stands out as having the most patina and we'll get to the
other flaws soon. Meanwhile, you're not going to need to rechrome
anything as it's all in nice shape including the massive grille
bars. A chevron shaped cowl vent contours to the split windshield
and corner rear corner window flank that solid middle window
overlooking a clean diamond steel bed painted black and housing a
spare. 15-inch wheels are painted to match and include red bowtie
caps and beauty rings; in profile, picked up visually by the chrome
escutcheons and call out on the hood. Imperfections include chips,
often accompanied by surface rust in place of paint, holes for
missing trim or emblems, scratches, scuffs, painted over rust on
the tailgate, edgewear, paint runs and under coverage on door
bottom edge, cracks, and off color touch ups.
Interior
Gray door cards are mounted onto gray painted steel doors, both
showing a touch of patina and use but opening up to a very clean
gray vinyl bench seat that looks fresh. The black steering wheel
wears a horn ring and gray spokes as it fronts the gray dashboard
with its vintage gauges and clean chrome grille center and right. A
ribbed rubber floor covering protects the floor and encircles the
pedals while the black vinyl headliner appears a bit wavy.
Drivetrain
Taking up just part of the engine bay is a 235.5ci inline six
cylinder rated at 115 horsepower and fueled by a 1-barrel
carburetor. It's mated to a 3-speed manual and power is routed to
the rear axle with 4.11 gears. The truck runs on a 12 volt
system.
Undercarriage
Some normal patina, a drop or two of oil, but otherwise remarkably
clean conditions are found underneath. Like Ella sings, "She's from
Texas, I can tell". The single exhaust splits into two and runs
through glasspack style mufflers on its way to a chrome tipped exit
out back. Drum brakes are on all four wheels and leaf springs are
utilized front and rear.
Drive-Ability
The straight six starts and runs without issue as we truck our way
around the test loop. The clean cabin is certainly a nice place to
be and the 20 year old tires mean we keep things to a reasonable
speed, which is fine since this isn't a muscle car. We note the
left turn signal, brake lights, wipers and heater blower are not
working but all other functions operate as they should and you'll
find this nice driver in the truck room! While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
You'll be two steppin' around the room after the purchase of this
fine vintage truck with great bones, enormous potential, and a
ready to go driving experience just as she sits. California and
Texas rank as some of the best places to find vintage cars and
trucks, and this is a rare opportunity to purchase a transplant
here in the northeast!
