In 1979, Chevrolet truck configuration contained a variety of
options that included fleetside sport, stepside short, chassis cab,
crew cab, camper special, and trailering packages. Trim was
relegated to four main options including the standard Custom
Deluxe, Scottdale, Cheyenne, and the top level Silverado trim.
There was also the notable ability to add options to different
exteriors and trim levels creating a truck essentially customized
to your desired specifications.
For consignment, a 1979 Chevrolet C10 stepside short bed truck
showing 31,142 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to NY
title exemption. This one started life with the ill fated 5.7 liter
diesel V8, and now enjoys the fruits of modern times and
substantial upgrades to appearance and performance.
Exterior
There are some things that set this truck apart from other step
side short beds. Two stage Merlot Jewel Metallic paint glimmers
like a glass of, well, Merlot and the truck hunkers down over
18-inch and 20-inch Riddler wheels in argent gray. The smooth
walled bed is lined with golden oak planks in perfect condition and
separated by body colored rails. In back, a louvered tailgate
allows the turbulent bed air to exit, plus it looks cool. The flat
nose features a blackened grille and a cowl hood that adds
aggression like the horn of a rhinoceros. Chrome bumpers front and
back look great and two exhaust tips emerge from the back.
Imperfections include an alignment issue with the hood, light
bubbling and blistering, and some evident filler in a corner.
Interior
Charcoal black is the interior palette beginning with the plastic
door cards with ribbed inserts, both presenting in very nice shape.
The updated bench seat in vinyl has two defined sitting areas that
include side support and a flat, central section for a third
occupant. Up front, a three spoke sport steering wheel fronts an
instrument cluster now bolstered with Equus white faced gauges,
bold and easy to read. The right cove holds a cubby, vent levers,
and an AM/FM/CD player while the column shifter wears a skull knob.
Down below, clean black carpet is found with a topper on the
transmission tunnel that provides storage and cupholders. The
fitted headliner is also in great shape.
Drivetrain
The clean engine bay holds a 350ci V8 which our consignor states is
a Blueprint crate unit with a stated 376 horsepower. It's fueled by
a 4-barrel carburetor and mated to a Level 10 700R4 4-speed
automatic transmission with power routed to the 12 bolt rear axle
with 3.73 gears and Positraction. Headers, power brakes and power
steering are on board.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with minimal surface rust and dry conditions. The
dual exhaust run through Flow FX by FlowMaster mufflers on their
way to a chrome tipped exit. We note the lack of a catalytic
converter on board. Power brakes are configured as front disc and
rear drum and suspension is comprised of coil springs in front and
leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
So much better than the original bench, the upgraded version is
comfortable and supportive. The V8 comes to life with a healthy
exhaust note and we roll this shiny machine onto the test loop
where it provides good power underfoot, nice handling and straight
tracking. To top things off, all functions operate as they should.
Cruise night, here we come! While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
A desirable body style, the stepside makes a fantastic base for
customizations and this one exhibits some nice improvements without
being over the top. Just a clean version of a former work truck,
now ready for show and go.
