After six generations, nearly 40 years of production, dozens of
special editions, Chevrolet ended the Monte Carlo line in 2007. It
began in 1970 when GM decided to stretch the A-body platform in
front of the firewall creating a long nose, which Pontiac had
proven with its Grand Prix which outsold the larger B-body cars.
This long hood layout would eventually become its own platform
known affectionately and internally as G-bodies.
For consignment, a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo hardtop with a title
verified 101,889 actual miles. Based on our experience, Monte's
have an enthusiastic following and good ones don't last long at the
mall. This is a likely candidate for the same. It retains its
number matching transmission.
Exterior
Mist Green was the choice at purchase in 1970 and then when it was
repainted with glossy, two stage coverage. The black vinyl top
offers a spectacular contrast and a bit of a sandwiching effect
when matched with the tires. In the center of the grated black
grille is the Corinthian helmet, (similar to the Spartan helmet),
and flanked by single round headlights with round cornered bezels.
The chrome bumpers, door handles, side mirror, rocker trim and
other metal trim are in very good shape while handsome vertical
tail lights are classic in their simplicity. The front parking
lights are integrated into the chrome bumpers, the reverse lights
in the rear, and two exhaust tips emerge from underneath. 15-inch
Chevrolet Rally wheels hold 60 series tires with letters out and
provide a nice, square stance. Imperfections include several small
inclusions, some dings in the rocker trim, front fender gap issues,
and a touch of filler evidence behind the rear wheel.
Interior
Green vinyl patterned door panels on both doors present in very
nice shape with some discoloration and patina on the harder plastic
of the arm rests. Dark green grain vinyl also covers the split
bench up front, framed in black, and other than some compression,
remains in good condition. The rear bench is also stitch patterned
and has belts for three. The standard steering wheel of green
plastic and plastic burl wood leads to a flow of burlwood applique
which rides over the dashboard where standard gauges are now
accompanied by an added triple pack under the dash. There's a sleek
update AM/FM radio with USB and USB-C ports while the A/C panel
remains vintage. As a column shift car, the floor is open and
covered in green twist carpet under a green headliner with shoulder
belts clipped, all in good shape. A carpet piece covers the trunk
floor which shows a bit of surface rust.
Drivetrain
This stock looking Monte opens up to a showy and chrome laden
engine; a period correct 350ci V8 with aluminum heads and a
4-barrel carburetor. It's mated to its numbers matching TH350
3-speed automatic that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle. The
car is equipped with power brakes, power steering, headers, and air
conditioning.
Undercarriage
Clean and solid driver quality conditions are found underneath with
typical patina and some residual oil. Power brakes are here as
front disc and rear drum and the dual exhaust runs through Turbo
mufflers before exiting out back. Suspension includes coil springs
front and rear with a 4 link attached in back.
Drive-Ability
From the days of Ironside and Marcus Welby, MD, comes this green
vinyl interior; so fantastically period, it's like stepping back in
time! The 350 starts up and a healthy roar is emitting from the
exhaust. On the test loop, the car does everything well, tracks
straight, and has decent power underfoot. Only the clock and heater
blower high setting are not working, but all other functions work
as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
More than 140,000 Monte Carlos were built in their first year and
proved to be popular and common commuter cars. Who would have
guessed that the design would become iconic and classic and, by our
estimation, highly desirable in the specialty car world. Here's a
very nice example in an undeniable period color.
