"The 427R has an ominous presence on the street. It extracts mad
attention from car guys and girls, too. I can't recall a test car
that caused so many cell phone cameras to be whipped out. Even the
teenagers on my block had their jaws dropping, as did the guy at
the local pizza joint. There's something magical about this car and
the numbers 4-2-7. Be it the 427 badging, the side stripe, or the
aggressive overall look, this Stang makes heads turn-rapidly.
Thankfully, there is performance to match." MotorTrend, May
2008
For consignment, a 2008 Ford Mustang Roush 427R coupe with a
verified 83,819 actual miles. What started life as a mild mannered
V8 coupe left the Roush laboratory with a bit of a facelift, an
intercooled supercharger, and a whopping 135 extra horses.
Exterior
There's no mistaking the hockey stick stripe on the side and the
Roush emblem and 427 call out. That white stripe stands out, as
does the center hood stripe, against the Vista Blue background. The
non functional hood scoop reads RoushCharger, the company taking
ownership of the twin roots system underneath. The front fascia has
been broadened with integrated foglights while inboard rally lights
fill the grille. Rear quarter louvers were optional and look great
here, matching the aggression of the wide spoiler, rocker plates
and body extenders. 18-inch chrome Roush wheels carry 275/40ZRR18
tires with a mid 2022 date code and the wheels suffer from some
deplating and rust spots in its spoke corners and some curb rash.
Other imperfections include rock chips up front, oxidized headlight
covers, an area of orange peel, creases in the taped stripe, other
random scratches and chips, rock spray, well liner separation, flex
cracks and damage to the chin spoiler. This car has been driven and
enjoyed and has a few witness marks to prove it!
Interior
Carbon fiber overlay is first noticed on the otherwise standard GT
door panels, here with the typical failing glue of the leather
inserts but their edges remain intact. Blue leather inserts on the
front buckets include Jack's name embroidered on their backs and
they are framed in charcoal bolsters and supports, showing wear on
the driver's side as one might expect. Also predictable, the rear
2+2 are in essentially mint condition. Up front, white faced gauges
catch your eye behind the standard steering wheel and the carbon
fiber faceplates dress the center stack where we find the AM/FM/CD
radio and A/C panel. Roush is imprinted on the white shifter knob
and engraved in the shaft while black carpet below wears 427R
branded mats. The foam backed headliner is perfect and the trunk
comes to us looking unused. Counting the engraved pedals, "ROUSH"
appears eight times in the interior, for those counting.
Drivetrain
Add four more nameplates in the engine bay where we find the 4.6
liter 3V supercharged V8 with 435 horsepower and a serial number
plate indicating this is car number 327. It's mated to a Tremec
3650 5-speed manual transmission sending power to the Ford 8.8"
rear with 3.55 gears and TracLoc. We note some blistering and
peeling paint on the insides of the hood itself.
Undercarriage
Your typical surface rust is found, mainly on the driveshaft and
exhaust, but otherwise the underside is clean and bone dry. Four
piston power disc brakes are standard on the Stage 3 Roush and
suspension has been tuned to the wheels by Roush, here comprised of
Macpherson struts in front, a 3 link with coil springs and a
panhard bar in back, and some meaty sway bars at both ends. The
dual exhaust runs through its original muffler and exits
traditionally through chrome tips that fit in gaps of the
valance.
Drive-Ability
The car still delivers with great sound, immense power, and superb
handling. The interior is a tick better than a stock GT and remains
as comfortable and practical, the shifter is smooth and throttle is
responsive. This fine example passes the functionality test with
flying colors as everything works. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Here's a winning combination that will have you standing out from
the Mustang crowd, and that's not always easy. It's a beautiful
package that still retains the venerable 4.6 liter which provides
all the fun you'll need, and the bold assertion of the Roush name
and reputation
