Back in 1985, Chevrolet understood something that today's
automotive engineers seem to have forgotten. Sometimes a man needs
a pickup truck, sometimes he needs a comfortable cruiser, and
sometimes he just wants to look good pulling into the local
watering hole. Enter the Chevrolet El Camino, the automotive
equivalent of a mullet, business up front and a party out back, and
somehow cooler today than it was 40 years ago.
GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this charming 1985 Chevrolet
El Camino, finished in Light Bronze Metallic over a handsome tan
vinyl bench seat interior. With just 91,000 original miles and
ownership dating back to 2007 with its previous caretaker, this is
an honest, well preserved example of one of Chevrolet's most
entertaining creations. No wild engine swaps, no ridiculous
modifications, and no attempts to turn it into something it was
never meant to be. Just a good old fashioned American cruiser with
a bed in the back and a V8 under the hood.
Power comes from Chevrolet's trusty 305 cubic inch V8 paired with
an automatic transmission, delivering the kind of relaxed,
effortless cruising that made these cars such favorites. Power
steering, power brakes, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel,
cruise control, and an AM/FM stereo provide all the creature
comforts a fellow could reasonably ask for in 1985. A set of
upgraded wheels adds just the right amount of attitude, while dual
exhaust gives that small block Chevy a little extra voice. There's
even a tow hitch out back, because apparently looking this good
wasn't enough, it still wanted to earn its keep.
Recent attention includes a carburetor rebuild, new spark plugs,
fresh carpeting, and the upgraded wheels. The horn works, the
lights illuminate, the cigarette lighter is ready for duty, and
best of all, the air conditioning blows cold. The original spare
tire and jack remain with the vehicle, along with the owner's
manuals and some service records. The AM/FM radio works
intermittently, which is really just the El Camino's way of
encouraging you to roll down the windows and listen to that V8
instead.
Cosmetically, this El Camino presents as a clean and largely
original survivor with the honest character that comes from four
decades on the road. There are some paint chips on the front
fascia, but nothing that takes away from its overall charm. The
Light Bronze Metallic paint and tan interior make for a wonderfully
period correct combination that looks equally at home outside the
hardware store, the country club, or the neighborhood burger
joint.
The beauty of an El Camino is that it never really had to make
sense. It wasn't quite a car, wasn't quite a truck, and certainly
wasn't interested in anyone else's opinion. It was built for the
guy who wanted to haul a lawn mower on Saturday, take his
sweetheart to dinner that evening, and still have something
interesting to talk about at the gas station on Sunday.
With 91,000 original miles, long term ownership, a dependable small
block V8, and plenty of old school personality, this 1985 El Camino
is ready for its next chapter. Throw a cooler in the back, turn the
key, and enjoy a little slice of America from a time when cars had
character and nobody needed a touchscreen to have a good time.
Half car, half truck, and 100 percent American personality.
