"The 1951 Kaiser was developed from a new kind of thinking, a new
application of science, a new consideration of human needs and
wants as they have changed with the growth of motor
transportations. It brings you the triumph of a great and needed
thing, Anatomic Design, the designing of the anatomy of the car to
suit the anatomy and needs of the human being. You will find when
you drive in that the 1951 Kaiser comes as close to becoming a part
of you as a motor car may come." From the 1951 dealer brochure.
For consignment, a 1951 Kaiser Henry J Model K513 sedan showing
70,822 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Our consignor states
this was restored in the 70's and has a recent pan gasket and rear
main seal replacement.
Exterior
Expressed in single stage Medium Blue, there's no denying the
unique, almost whimsical shape of the car with a 40's era front
leaning fascia, a rounded roofline, and a short tail with fin-like
protrusions. Up front, an airplane shaped grille and its contoured
framing are done in chrome while the headlights charge forward and
lead the way, leaving the acrylic bullet shaped hood ornament
slightly behind but no less piercing. The bumper is almost a
separate component, spreading wide and wrapping around its own
base. In back, a sweeping rear slope is capped by two simple tail
lights. Reverse lights were an option at Kaiser. Henry J's
signature appears on the hatchless rear and on the nose. The wheels
illustrate the ideal setup; color matched steel, beauty ring,
chrome hubcaps and white wall tires. Imperfections include chips,
scratches, edgewear, and cracking paint throughout.
Interior
Simple gray vinyl door panels line the doors and ivory escutcheons
line the two handles including the window crank. Gray piping lines
the plaid cloth split bench seat up front as well as the bench in
back, all in great condition. A unique ivory steering wheel fronts
a simple dash with a single gauge cluster in black, surrounded by
chrome like a picture frame and relaying speed, fuel level,
temperature with oil and amp lights and the fashionable Kaiser "K"
in yellow. Royal blue carpet covers the floor and a gray toned
headliner is above, both showing some slight signs of age.
Drivetrain
Like the rest of the car, the drivetrain is interesting too. Here's
a 134.2ci F-head Hurricane inline four cylinder with 65 horsepower
and fed by a Cater YF832S 1-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a
3-speed manual, (on the tree), with overdrive and power is routed
to the rear axle with 4.11 gears.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with surface rust and some residual oil.
The single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler and exits out
back, drum brakes are on all four wheels, and suspension consists
of coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
Compact and simple, the Kaiser hits the test loop like a champ. You
won't win any races going from point A to point B, but you'll still
have fun getting there in this little runabout. We're on tires that
are more than 30 years old so won't be pushing our luck, but
testing functionality doesn't require it and we find that all
working items operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
According to circlekf.com, 39,400 Model K513 four cylinders were
produced in 1951. Another 42,542 were produced with a six cylinder.
So while not wildly rare, today, K513's are incredibly uncommon and
this one presents very nicely despite the older restoration and is
ready for its next caretaker.
