"Initially, Ferrari constructed only racing cars, but by 1950, they
began to produce exclusive road going coupes and convertibles, in
part to fund the racing effort. The early Ferrari road cars were
produced in very small numbers, but by 1955, a brochure described a
new model as "the first series produced vehicle benefiting from the
experiences of the race track". The new model that this brochure
described was the second series of Ferrari 250 GTs, which became
known as the 250 GT Boano Coupe and 250 GT Ellena Coupe. Unveiled
at the 1956 Geneva Salon, the new model had more graceful
proportions, with a slimmer front grille and clean, straight lines
stretching the length of the car from the wings to the upright tail
lights." Excepted from Hemmings.com
For consignment, a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Ellena with a title verified
29,183 actual miles. Carrozzeria Ellena continued the work of Pinin
Farina to produce 50 GT's known as Ellena coupes. This is the 39th
example of the 50 built.
Exterior
Like a fine wine, two stage Rosso Barchetta paint cover our long
wheelbase coupe noted for their improved headroom evident in the
roofline. A curved windshield, sweeping side windows, and
wrap-around rear window creates a stunning profile and bright
greenhouse while the leaning pillars set the line for the rear door
seam and back edge of the car capped by polished housing of three
part tail lights. Rear fender lines are subject to the oval lights
and surround a rounded decklid, smooth rear panel, and chrome
bumper that contours beautifully to the sculpted sheet metal. The
pattern is repeated in the front where round headlights cap curved
fenders and inboard fog lights take their place on the egg crate
grille, encased in polished housing that complements the front
bumper. 16-inch chrome wire wheels flank a rocker trim piece that
visually completes the lower detail line set by the wrap-around
bumpers.
Interior
Here's where design and materials meet function and flow with
beautifully drawn tan leather door panels with delicate details and
hardware highlighted by piping. The bucket seat bottoms meet the
carpeted transmission tunnel while the backs come together with
contouring for it. Behind them, the carpeted package shelf includes
a pair of leather belts to secure your cargo and presents in
excellent condition. The Nardi wood steering wheel rim seems to
melt into its metal spokes and hub which proudly carries the
Prancing Horse. The body colored dashboard surrounds correct gauges
with polished rings along with black knobs and indicator lights.
The remainder of the dash including the glove box are finely
sculpted and smooth. In the center we find the shifter, favoring
the driver of course, along with an ashtray in a leather covered
box over tan carpet. The light headliner on the raised ceiling is
impeccable and modest courtesy lights appear on the C-pillars.
Drivetrain
Here we have the 3.0 liter SOHC V12, capable of 240 horsepower and
fueled through three Weber 36DCL2 2-barrel carburetors. The 4-speed
manual gearbox routes power to the rear axle with a 4.57 ratio.
Undercarriage
Some patina is noted on an otherwise clean underside. The factory
headers lead to a dual exhaust system running through stock style
mufflers, eventually finding an exit through twin pipes and
polished tips on each side. Drum brakes are supplied to all four
wheels and suspension include coil overs in front and leaf springs
with trailing arms in the back.
Drive-Ability
This car does not currently run and the knee action of the rear
shocks is frozen.

what Sports Car Illustrated called "a Grand Touring masterpiece
without comparables."
