The Super is a brilliant addition to the 1940 Buick line. New clear
through, stunningly styled in the patterns of the future, the Super
impresses you as being worth two hundred dollars more than its
actual price. Its whole appearance is new, with its low roof line,
it's great width, the absence of running boards, and sleek
streamlining. The Super is the ideal choice for buyers who want
ultramodern styling and luxury but who demand small car operating
expenses. Fender well equipment and running boards are not
available on these models, (51 and 56-s). White sidewall tires are
extra." From the 1940 Buick brochure.
For consignment, a 1940 Buick Super Model 56S Sport Coupe with a
title verified 74,167 actual miles. In June of 2026, extensive work
was done to improve mechanicals and included new fuel pump,
battery, water pump, hoses, clutch, sway bar links and shock
links.
Exterior
Anytime a vintage car comes in wearing something lighter than
black, it raises some eyebrows and this is a stunner in two stage
Dark Aqua Steel Blue Metallic that covers this big bodied car with
very few imperfections. In profile, the 16-inch wheels, a
combination of red steel, polished caps, and wide white walls, make
a bold statement and practicality had us saluting in respect! The
B-pillar cant matches the slope of the C-pillar and sweeping
fenders, giving the car a forward leaning, in-motion stance. Up
front, marker lights become streaking fender ornaments while the
art deco piece leads on the hood atop stainless trim that runs from
the front of the grill back to the cowl and splitting the
windshield. The decklid is simply grand, a flowing dome-like
expression of metal flanked by demure tail lights. The body and
paint are excellent with imperfections that include light pitting
on the nose crest, a light surface scratch, uneven filler at the
rocker panel, light bubbles, and a few minor inclusions.
Interior
We would classify the interior condition as more survivor and
amazingly original with tan cloth door panels that show some age
under a marbled wood motif on the sill and window reveal. The split
bench seat, here in tan broadcloth, shows some staining and a few
small holes but otherwise in good condition, and the rear bench is
in very good condition. Up front, the rim of our banjo style
steering wheel has some cracks in its ivory plastic rim and leads
for a vintage, art deco instrument cluster with spun metal
faceplate, taupe faced gauges, and more marbled wood surround. An
AM radio is in the center and some faces along with the ivory
buttons and rubberized floor covering show a touch of patina but we
would not hesitate to show this car just as it is. The headliner,
visors and windlace are in great shape and the trunk presents as
original with plywood shelves and a spare tire.
Drivetrain
A clean 248ci inline eight cylinder is up front with a 2-barrel
carburetor rated at 107 horsepower and a 3-speed manual
transmission behind. Power is routed to the rear axle with 4.40
gears. The car runs on a 6 volt system. There's some patina in the
bay, but overall complete and original looking.
Undercarriage
We have patina here with some typical surface rust and some
residual oil on the pans but overall a clean and dry environment
that shows no invasive rust. A single exhaust flows through a stock
style muffler and ends with a chrome tip while drum brakes occupy
all four wheels. Suspension includes coil springs at both ends with
a 3 link attached in back.
Drive-Ability
We take a seat in this stately blue ride and work the "tree" to
shift our way onto the test loop where the car performs well,
tracking straight and stopping on demand. We do note an exhaust
leak and the wipersare not working, but all other functions operate
as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
In terms of the period's popular cars that included Ford,
Chevrolet, and Chrysler, Buicks stand out as a touch more obscure
and Buick people seem to be a more exclusive group. More than
100,000 Supers were produced in 1940, but we simply don't see them
in the numbers of the other brands, and this one is a mighty fine
example!
