The Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer, (BB), is an automobile that was
produced by Ferrari in Italy between 1973 and 1984. Replacing the
front engined Ferrari Daytona, it was the first in a series of
Ferraris to use a mid mounted flat 12 engine. The Boxer was
designed by Leonardo Fioravanti and was the first mid engined road
car to bear the Ferrari name and the Cavallino Rampante, (prancing
horse), logo.
For consignment a 11,911 title verified actual mile1984 BB 512i.
This example represents the penultimate late development Berlinetta
Boxer. This final iteration of the venerable BB series is widely
considered the easiest and most pleasurable to own and drive,
benefitting from Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, replacing the
triple choke Weber carburetors. This upgraded engine, dubbed 'Tipo
F110A', offered not only more power, but greatly improved cold
starting and drivability. With just over 1000 cars produced over
four years, the 512BBi exemplifies 1980s iconic design and future
collectability.
Exterior
All beautifully bathed in Corso Rosso this car exemplifies the mid
1980's design utilizing squares and rectangles, however for the low
slung racer, it has a chiseled look. Starting from its front
pinched grille and front bumper with the grille all below, and
sporting a small front spoiler on the bottom, it has hidden head
lighting and a "trunk" lid. This leads us to the severely raked
back front screen and low door wide for easy access. A vertical
rear glass and some flying buttresses frame on either side a litany
of venting and are intakes for that mid engine. And it will be easy
to wrench because literally the entire back of the car lifts up to
reveal the 12 cylinder engine and rear suspension. The Scuderia
round tail lights and a rectangular rear roll pan with some early
aero screening and side mounted running lights are noted on the
back bottom, (shades of an early diffuser?). Some sexy black
Italian designed mirrors hang off of either side, and more black
trimmings are surrounding the glass and rear venting as well as an
encircling mid line just below the belt. 5 spoke 412mm wheels are
wrapped in 240/55VR15 rubber from 1993 on all 4 corners. Think
Lambo Countach with standard doors and the Cavallino Rampante badge
and you have the BB for consignment.
Interior
A swing of these sexy low slung doors reveals plenty of black
leather to sneak into with high back buckets that have split tuck
and roll center panels and smooth bolsters along with a headrest
for when you press the go pedal to the floor. The driver's seat
shows some slight wear on the side bolster near the back adjuster.
A black center console races through the seats, and has a side
mounted separate gated shifter right next to the driver. Window,
fan and temp sliders make top the remainder of the console leaving
room on the square and rectangle dash for gauges the the sound
system. This sporty car has AC! Above is a felted light grey
textured headliner with some courtesy lighting in the back.
Drivetrain
Crammed in the very center of the car is the 5.0 Liter 12 cylinder
V formation power plant that sports Bosch K-Jetronic EFI. A 5 speed
manual transmission is on back with a 3.214 final drive.
Undercarriage
Showing slight age there is no rust to be seen, just stainless
steel mufflers fed from headers, 4 wheel disc brakes, and road
hugging independent coil over suspension.
Drive-AbilityAs this car recently came out of storage, a full going
over is due before any attempt is made to start it.
Lots of WOW factor in this chiseled era 512i BB sports car. A
collector with a mere 11K miles and in pristine condition ready to
take it out and just growl at the competition.
