The Fleetwood Body Company of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, was founded
by Harry Urich in the nineteenth century. It began as a small
community of craftsmen founded by Henry Fleetwood, Esq. of
Penwortham, near Lancaster, England. When the Sixty Special Series
was retired in 1977, the Fleetwood Brougham took its place as
Cadillac's largest owner driven sedan model through 1986. From
1987, it was renamed to Cadillac Brougham and the "d'Elegance" was
an option package that designated the most luxurious Brougham.
For consignment, a 1991 Cadillac Brougham sedan with a title
verified 124,639 actual miles. Distinctly Cadillac and still rear
wheel drive, this stately automobile represented the pinnacle of
success of the era. This one's been mechanically well maintained
with the fuel, cooling, brakes, and ignition systems fully
addressed.
Exterior
Long straight panels and large horizontal surfaces are colored with
two stage Gunmetal Metallic presenting in a mixed bag of
conditions; the vertical panels are mostly in nice shape and in
profile, the car presents straight. Horizontal surfaces, however,
suffer from failing clear coat, peeling paint, dry vinyl on the
roof and oxidation. The Cadillac crest appears on the C-pillars and
vinyl surrounds the fixed quarter window on the door. For extra
luxury, a coach lamp is smoothly embedded in each chrome B-pillar.
Wire wheel covers adorn each of the 15-inch wheels picking up on
the brightness of the trim panel and silver paint runs over the
rocker. Out back, robust chrome tail light nacelles surround the
vertical lenses with a frosted presentation and small Cadillac coat
of arms, bookending the razor straight chrome bumper. Composite
headlights looked very modern in 1991 and are topped by a classic
hood ornament. Other imperfections include chipped paint, oxidation
on the flared wheel openings, a cracked windshield, scratches,
bubbling at the rocker, and rust spots in the chrome bumpers,
Interior
Medium gray leather covers the luxurious doors and Brougham is
embroidered into each, indicating the model's design option.
Simulated wood trim is everywhere, including around each element of
the doors where chrome and brushed nickel metal sets a classy
contrast. Seatbelts are anchored to the front doors in an
interesting configuration. Once inside, the buckets seats of gray
leather are in extremely rough shape with large rips through to the
foam. The rear bench is in better shape with some patina creasing
but intact. The steering wheel and dash dominated by the woodgrain
is in good condition with a digital read out instead of analog
needles, and the center stack contains a JVC AM/FM/CD radio and an
electronic climate control panel. Up top, the dash pad is cracked
in several places but the plush gray carpet below shows age but
remains deep piled. Lots of sagging is noted on the headliner and
the enormous trunk is finished with gray cloth panels and a
Cadillac branded mat, housing a covered spare and plenty of room
for other things, all presenting cleanly.
Drivetrain
Under the big hood is a driver quality and stock looking 5.0 liter
V8 with electronic fuel injection and a horsepower rating of 170.
It is backed by GM's trustworthy 700R4 4-speed transmission that
routes power all the way back to the 10 bolt axle with 3.08 gears.
Our consignor states the battery, distributor cap, ignition control
module, sparks, wires, and cap are newer.
Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions prevail underneath with surface rust
throughout, some on the door bottoms, but overall dry and solid
conditions. We note a spot of rust on one pan. A single exhaust
runs through a stock style muffler and power brakes are onboard to
slow this land yacht, disc up front with newer pads and rotors and
drums in back. Coil springs are front and rear with a 4 link in
back.
Drive-Ability
This car moves well under its own power, tracking straight and
handling well with 75 series tires that have a late 2019 date code.
All systems work on this car with the exception of the air
conditioning. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
A bit of a diamond in the rough but a mechanically sound car and
one of a popular model that sells quickly here at the mall. If
elegance is what you seek, the Brougham is the one to have!
