"While the mid size muscle cars have shot into the collector
stratosphere in recent years, it seems that just about everyone has
forgotten the mighty powerhouse creations that arrive within the
full size lineup from Detroit. Oft written, rearranged paragraphs
about the NASCAR and NHRA homologation rules and estimated
production figures spur many a dream of finding a rare, and
stunningly powerful beast in dear old Uncle Fred's dusty barn.
Truth be told, the mid 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Fastback falls
squarely into this category."
For consignment, a mid year 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 2 door fastback
with a showing 35,651 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to
a PA title exemption. The sport hardtop of the early '63 cars
became the fastback mid year. This example was repainted in 2000
and that same year, its engine was rebuilt. In 2020, the interior
was replaced.
Exterior
The car's had one repaint still has some old school appeal as
single stage Raven Black that is augmented by typical 60's trim and
molding including a broad piece of stainless the runs over the
shoulder line, then does a hairpin turn to continue through the
midline, encircling rear hash marks in the process and a spear that
points to the Galaxie logo on the front fender. Fender ornaments
are like a pair of shark fins over the black painted stamped
grille, quad headlights and a straight chrome bumper. That stamped
grille is repeated in back, this time without paint, sitting
between the afterburner tail lights and a laser straight,
mirror-like rear bumper. The car is replete with long panels,
including the hood, decklid, and the roof that's extended by the
broad, sloping C-pillar. 14-inch steel wheels are dressed with faux
knock off covers and some surface rust on the wheels could be
remedied with the quick work of a rattle can of black. Other
imperfections include surface scratches throughout, bubbling,
inclusions, chips, scratches, orange peel, and blistering.
Interior
The black vinyl door panels feature polished trim and a textured
backing plate to the armrest that looks like it came from a steel
drum. Our split bench seat and rear bench are also black vinyl with
cabochon ornamentation and cream piping and other than some loose
vinyl in back, all seats present in very nice condition. By today's
standards, the steering wheel is thin and this one shows some
cracks in the ribbed handle, fronting an original looking dash with
horizontal speedometer flanked by circular units. There's lots of
ribbed metal here and it spans the width, taking in the vent panel
and AM/FM/Cassette radio. Black carpet floods the floor nicely with
Ford weather mats on top, and the perforated headliner up top is
excellent. The trunk is barren and clean with just a touch of
surface rust.
Drivetrain
Chrome valve covers and ribbed air filter housing adds some showy
elements to this clean engine bay housing a 390ci V8 with 300
horsepower and an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a
Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to
the Ford 9" in back with 3.00 gears. The fantastic wiper fluid bag
in red will get everyone's attention! Power steering is on
board.
Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions are found underneath but overall clean
with some seepage from the rear diff fill plug and/or pinion seal.
We note one spot of flaking rust on the belly but otherwise solid
structure is found. Dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster mufflers
on their way to chrome tips and drum brakes are front and rear.
Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in
back.
Drive-Ability
A quick start, the Galaxie floats across our test loop with good
power and braking on demand. It's all clean surfaces on the inside,
and hood ornaments on the outside to guide the nose of Galaxie are
appealing and it scores 100 on the functionality test! While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
In season four of The Andy Griffith show, they used a '63 Galaxie
as the sheriff's car. Coming at you, this looks just like that car,
but turn to the side, and it has something better than four doors;
it's a two door fastback! We think if Barney Fife drove around in
this car, he'd be slightly more intimidating to Mayberry's ne'er do
wells!
