This 1968 Pontiac GTO is really a wonderful car. To begin, it is a genuine 242-code GTO that has seen a frame-off restoration. Equipment includes a 4-speed transmission, hideaway headlights, hood tach, air conditioning, and more. But perhaps even better is the ride this Pontiac delivers; it is one of the best you’ll experience from this era.

This GTO was found in Virginia in 2007. It underwent a multi-year restoration concluding in 2015 and followed by a few more updates over the years. This was truly a comprehensive effort that did not cut any corners. Two large folders of receipts and notes are included. The body was repainted in its original code E Aegena Blue (aka Aegean Blue). The hideaway headlights really add to the look and work perfectly as does the hood tachometer. It rolls on 14x6 Hurst style wheels with curved spinner caps along with Firestone Wide Oval tires.

The engine was replaced with a completely rebuilt 455 ci from the early 70’s (casting number 485428, application code YC). Features include an Eagle crankshaft, H-beam connecting rods, KB pistons, and a Crane Cams 968781 camshaft. Note the functional Ram Air setup as well. Gear selection is through a Muncie 4-speed, while the rear end uses an Auburn limited slip differential with 3.90 gears. Power steering and power front disc brakes are present for easy driving and solid performance. The rear 4-link suspension uses Eliminator bars on the upper arms for improved traction. As mentioned, the ride quality is truly amazing for this vintage!

The interior is standard GTO with new or reconditioned components throughout. Up front are dual bucket seats that flank a center console which houses the shifter and a center storage compartment. The door panels, headliner, and carpet all look fantastic as does the dashboard with woodgrain insert. There is also a tilt steering column with wooden steering wheel. R134a air conditioning is also present and functional. All gauges, lights, and indicators work properly. So do the wipers, washers, and parking brakes. Even the factory style AM radio and in-dash clock are good! Finally, a matching spare tire and correct bumper jack are in the trunk.

The GM A-body delivered some of the most desirable models of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Like this car, many of them have powerful engines, 4-speed transmissions, air conditioning, and other popular features. But it’s hard to find one as enjoyable to drive as this GTO. The classic good looks are just icing on the cake.
