This 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS is a beautifully restored
example of Chevrolet's first-year Chevelle, combining the clean
styling and unmistakable character of an early A-body with a strong
small-block V8, 4-speed manual transmission and carefully selected
drivability upgrades.
The restoration reportedly consumed more than two years and
approximately $85,000, and the finished car presents as a clean,
well-detailed SS built to be driven as well as shown. Finished in
vivid PPG red paint, the body displays excellent gloss and straight
reflections, complemented by bright chrome bumpers, polished
stainless trim and the proper Malibu SS exterior badging.
Under the hood is a 327ci Chevrolet small-block V8 producing
approximately 365 horsepower. The engine is upgraded with Edelbrock
aluminum cylinder heads, an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor and
aluminum intake manifold, giving the car a strong
performance-oriented combination while retaining the visual
character expected in a traditional small-block Chevrolet engine
bay.
Backing the 327 is a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission operated
through a Hurst floor shifter. The combination gives this Chevelle
the mechanical layout enthusiasts want in an early SS: small-block
V8 power, three pedals and a manual gearbox.
Cooling is handled by an aluminum radiator, while the chassis has
been upgraded with front and rear sway bars for improved body
control. Power steering makes the car easier to maneuver, and power
front disc brakes provide a worthwhile improvement over the braking
systems typically found on early A-bodies.
The interior remains strongly rooted in the Chevelle's original
styling. It features white bucket seats, a matching rear seat, a
factory-style center console and a period-inspired rosewood
steering wheel. The red dashboard and carpeting contrast sharply
with the white upholstery, while the brushed-metal dash trim
maintains the unmistakable look of a 1964 Malibu SS. Auxiliary
gauges have been added below the dash for additional engine
monitoring.
This car is also equipped with factory air conditioning, a
desirable feature on any first-generation Chevelle and an
especially welcome addition for regular cruising.
The exterior stance is finished with polished five-spoke wheels
wrapped in 225/50R17 radial tires, providing a slightly more modern
footprint without taking away from the classic appearance. The
polished wheels also reveal the upgraded front disc-brake
hardware.
Importantly, the car retains its Fisher Body cowl tag, showing
Style 64-5837, supporting its identification as a Malibu SS V8
sport coupe. The tag also displays Trim 729 and Paint 922, adding
useful documentation to the car's identity.
From the detailed engine compartment to the clean interior and
restored exterior, this Chevelle presents as a thoughtfully
completed first-year SS. With its 327 V8, Muncie 4-speed, Hurst
shifter, power steering, power disc brakes, factory A/C and fresh
restoration, it offers the combination of classic looks and usable
performance that makes the early Chevelle such a desirable American
muscle car.
