"Hot and handsome; not just a new hardtop but a pair of them.
Outside, the swift, crisp lines of Thunderbird! Inside, luxury that
could come only from the stylists of Thunderbird! The new Sports
Coupe has deep foam cushioned bucket seats up front, a full length
console with spacious storage compartment in between and 3
passenger 'bucket styled' rear seat." From the 1963 sales
brochure.
For consignment, a 1963 Ford Fairlane 500 sports coupe with a title
verified 106,676 actual miles. More than 300,000 Fairlanes were
built in 1963 with just 26,268 of them being Sport Coupes.
Exterior
Nothing quite says Sport Coupe like red paint and this is doused in
two stage Rangoon Red with black accenting that makes it unique and
recognizable at the same time. The ever-widening spear on the side
is bordered by stainless trim and the black roof is also trimmed at
the C-pillar with a band detail in addition to the winged crest.
Fins begin on the quarter panel and track back with the black
spear, terminating in what we like to call cat ears in back,
pointed tips that extend beyond the afterburner tail lights and
ribbed, aluminum latch panel. Up front, facets of the grille have
been painted red, white and blue in between the quad headlights and
below the slight rise to the hood scoop. 14-inch Keystone Klassic
wheel perpetuate the sporty feel to the car and tires are mounted
with letters out. Imperfections include inclusions, chips, cracks,
paint runs, orange peel, blistering and bubbling.
Interior
The inside begins with a fantastic combination of ribbed vinyl door
cards in smooth, black framing and all accompanying hardware and
both doors are in great shape. That ribbed pattern fills the
inserts of the black bucket seats up front and the bench in the
back, all adorned with the red, white and blue cabochon
ornamentation and central white piping and all showing cleanly. The
view ahead starts off in vintage style with the narrow black
steering wheel and horn ring leading to the triple gauge instrument
cluster. Looking right, we enter the 21st century with a Kenwood
AM/FM/CD player next to the vintage vent lever panel, above a DVD
screen tied to the unit that's in the trunk, poised to play the
Andrew Dice Clay classic by the same name. The black dash pad is
solid and the carpet below is protected by Fairlane branded mats.
Up top, the black headliner is clean and intact, while the trunk
has a plaid vinyl mat and spare in addition to the DVD player.
DrivetrainUnder the hood is a clean 289ci V8 with an Edelbrock
4-barrel carburetor and finned "Powered by Ford" valve covers. It's
mated to a C4 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to
the Ford 8" rear with 3.00 gears. Headers are on board.
Undercarriage
Clean and dry conditions prevail underneath where you'll find dual
exhaust running through FlowMaster mufflers on their way to a dual
tipped and polished exit out back. Drum brakes are on all four
wheels and suspension includes coil springs in front and leaf
springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
The size of this car will appeal to many as it's just right; not
too big, not too small, and full of handsome right angles and great
color. The V8 fires up with a pleasing exhaust note and although
we're on 23 year old tires, the car still tracks straight and
handles turns at manageable speeds. The engine idles and runs
great. Of note, the horn and brake lights are not working and the
radio will need a code. Beyond that, all functions operate as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
It's got a few more cubic inches than it did when it left the
Dearborn plant in November of 1962, the carb barrels have been
doubled, and the transmission gets an extra gear. It's still in
Rangoon Red, now in two stages, and has enormous curb appeal in
design and configuration. We imagine if the Dice man saw this, he'd
say, "OOHH!!" just like we did!
