First released in 1970, the 2.2L 911 S was the range-topping high-performance variant of Porsche's sports car. Offering 180hp in comparison to the E's 155hp or the base model T's 125hp and featuring model-specific gear ratios, the S could reach 60mph from a standstill in only 7.8 seconds and attain a top speed of 144mph. Once again offered in coupe and Targa body styles, the 911 S was the pinnacle of sporting performance of its time. Heavier duty suspension further increased the model's handling abilities.
While the model was largely left alone for its final year in 1971, Porsche focused on increasing reliability with galvanized coating for the chassis and upgraded crankcase cooling. Never produced in great quantities, only 1,430 911 S coupes and 788 911 S Targas were produced in 1971. Today, these cars represent some of the most desirable variants of the model due to their charming combination of performance and pure driving dynamics.
