The 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air remains one of the defining designs of
the Tri-Five era, and this two-door hardtop combines that
unmistakable styling with a strong-running small-block V8,
four-speed manual transmission, upgraded braking, modern
instrumentation, and a tasteful lowered stance. Finished in its
factory Sierra Gold and Adobe Beige color combination, Code 700,
this Bel Air delivers classic 1950s presence with the kind of
improvements that make it far easier to enjoy on today's roads.
Power comes from a 327 cubic-inch Chevrolet V8 equipped with a mild
cam, giving the engine a little extra personality and the proper
small-block sound without making the car difficult to drive. It is
backed by a four-speed manual transmission, adding the level of
driver involvement enthusiasts want from a classic Chevrolet. The
detailed engine bay presents beautifully and includes an aluminum
radiator to help keep temperatures under control during
warm-weather cruising.
Power steering makes the car easy to maneuver, while power brakes
have been upgraded with front disc brakes and a Wilwood master
cylinder. The combination provides a substantial improvement in
stopping confidence compared with the original four-wheel drum
setup and complements the additional performance of the 327.
The body is finished in the factory Code 700 combination of Sierra
Gold and Adobe Beige, one of the most recognizable and attractive
colors available on a 1956 Bel Air. The car has also been lowered
approximately two inches, giving it a more aggressive stance
without taking away from the elegant proportions that make these
cars so desirable. American Racing wheels complete the look, with
17-inch wheels up front and larger 20-inch wheels at the rear for a
subtle staggered appearance.
Inside, the factory Code 618 Tan and Copper color combination
provides a period-inspired contrast to the exterior while several
thoughtful upgrades improve comfort and usability. Power windows
add modern convenience, while a tilt and telescoping steering
column makes it easier to find a comfortable driving position.
The original-style instrumentation has been replaced with an
Intellitronix Chevrolet Bel Air analog gauge cluster featuring GPS
functionality and LED illumination. The setup retains a
vintage-inspired appearance while providing more accurate and
easily readable information for the driver.
Attention has also been paid to areas that are often overlooked on
modified classics. The trunk compartment has been fully finished,
giving the car a more complete presentation whether it is being
shown at a local event or simply enjoyed on a weekend drive.
This Bel Air strikes a nice balance between classic styling and
modern drivability. It has not been transformed into an
over-the-top custom, nor is it represented as a completely stock
restoration. Instead, it retains the unmistakable character of a
1956 Chevrolet while incorporating upgrades that make it more
comfortable, responsive, and enjoyable to drive.
There are a few minor cosmetic flaws present, which are shown in
the accompanying photographs, but they do little to detract from
the car's strong overall presentation. It is the kind of classic
that can be driven and enjoyed without the concern that often comes
with a flawless show-only restoration.
With its factory Sierra Gold and Adobe Beige color combination, 327
V8, four-speed manual transmission, power steering, upgraded power
disc brakes, lowered stance, staggered American Racing wheels,
modern Intellitronix gauges, and finished trunk, this 1956
Chevrolet Bel Air Hardtop offers an appealing combination of
Tri-Five styling and thoughtful upgrades. It presents well, drives
with confidence, and is ready for cruise nights, shows, and plenty
of enjoyable miles with its next owner.
