"Although the steering may not be as crisp as the 911's, the
Corvette is nonetheless a bundle of fun to drive, with loads of
grip, fairly neutral handling, predictable responses, and power
oversteer just about anytime you want it. It may have gotten around
the streets almost a second slower than the Porsche, but the Vette
can blast onto the straight with its tail sliding wide and with the
driver wearing an even wider grin." Car and Driver, May 1998,
Comparo of Vette and Porsche 911 Carrera
For consignment, a 1998 Chevrolet Corvette coupe with a title
verified 13,920 actual miles. A low mileage, two owner car that's
always been garaged. If you need further convincing, read on!
Exterior
The second year of the C5 format maintains the dramatic
streamlining that differentiates this generation from the C4 with
familial characteristics firmly in place; the long, sloping hood
line, the fuselage-like cockpit, and the stunted, rounded tail.
Trailing the car, that rump is wide and aggressive with the epic
quad tail light configuration and exciting "new for 1997" center
exit quad exhaust, here with oval tips. This example is in
desirable two stage Black augmented by chrome versions of the 17
and 18-inch five spoke "wagon wheels," wrapped in ZR rated tires
with a late 2022 date code. There's a bit of whimsical
personalization with the fender tags that read, "LS1 Sick and
Twisted" just over the canted and obligatory fender vents.
Imperfections are limited to minor scuffs, a few chips, and chin
scrapes.
Interior
Two tone formed door panels include a black upper over a light gray
lower that creates a clean and sporty presentation with both doors
presenting cleanly, their rubber topped switchgear fully intact.
Gray leather buckets occupy the cabin with some wear and
discoloration on the driver's side but near perfection on the
shotgun seat. Simple and clear, the monochromatic control center
starts with a robust steering wheel framing a concise instrument
cluster while the integrated center stack houses the AM/FM/CD radio
and A/C panel, clean and unobtrusive. The center console is home to
the nice shifter and the ride control dial, all within easy reach
and presenting cleanly. Gray carpet on the floor is also in nice
shape and it adorns the cargo area where the targa top stores
perfectly.
Drivetrain
As one would expect, the engine bay is just about showroom clean
and houses the 5.7 LS1 V8 with 345 horsepower and a T56 6-speed
manual behind it. All that power is routed to the back where it
finds 3.42 gears and a limited slip differential. Our consignor
reports an 80mm throttle body has been added.
Undercarriage
Any doubts you had about the mileage are quashed when you look at
the underside which is fantastically clean and dry. Suspension
consists of an independent SLA system with forged aluminum control
arms and a transverse leaf spring in the front and for the rear an
independent 5 link arrangement with another transverse leaf spring.
The dual exhaust now features new headers, according to our
consignor, and stainless steel mufflers terminating with four oval
chrome tips. For America's great sports car, nothing short of power
disc brakes on all four wheels will do!
Drive-Ability
The nearly flawless car provides a trouble free ride, fulfilling
all the expectations of a pampered C5 with great acceleration,
superb handling, nice sound, and more fun than should be legal. All
functions in this particular example work exactly as intended.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
It's almost like buying a new C5 in 2026! It's a mostly stock
example in the right color with the right transmission and super
low mileage. Black paint always requires a little extra care but
we're guessing this won't be here long enough to collect dust.
