Zoom Classic Cars presents this 1931 Ford Model A Victoria
Leatherback Sedan. Frame-Off Restoration with great presentation
and documented history. The 1931 Ford Model A Victoria is one of
the more distinctive and collectible body styles of the Model A
era, combining elegant enclosed-car styling with the practicality
and charm that made Ford's early-1930s automobiles so popular. This
particular example is an especially interesting find: an authentic
early-style Victoria Leatherback, beautifully presented following a
comprehensive frame-off restoration completed in 1989 and carefully
maintained by its current owner for decades. The Victoria was a
more upscale offering within the Model A lineup, distinguished by
its formal roofline, slanted windshield, refined proportions, and
comfortable enclosed passenger compartment. The earliest Victorias
featured the distinctive leatherback roof, which utilized a
grained, leather-like covering stretched over crossbows, chicken
wire, and cotton batting. This construction gave the roof its
characteristic padded appearance. Ford subsequently eliminated the
leatherback treatment during 1931 as a cost-saving measure, making
the earlier configuration a particularly appealing detail for
enthusiasts and collectors. Approximately 36,000 Victorias were
built, adding to the desirability of this uncommon Model A body
style. This Victoria was an early car having a November 1930 serial
number. Victorias built in 1930 introduced the 1931 Model A Ford
changes. One piece splash aprons and radiator shells with two
painted panels. Victorias were the first cars built with a slant
windshield and no exterior sun visor. Visors are inside. The roof
line was lowered, mimicking the roof line of some of the more
stylist vehicles of the era. With its attractive color combination,
carefully executed restoration, and extensive supporting
documentation, this example offers a wonderful opportunity to
acquire a well-preserved and highly characterful piece of American
automotive history. The current owner purchased the car in 1985 and
undertook a full frame-off restoration, which was completed in
1989. The car has covered approximately 12,000 miles since the
restoration, reflecting years of enjoyment while remaining a
well-maintained example of the Model A Victoria. The body and hood
were refinished in black acrylic lacquer, which continues to
present very well today. The finish retains an attractive
period-correct appearance, with only a few minor imperfections and
areas of paint checking, as shown in the accompanying photographs.
Tasteful apple green pinstriping complements the apple
green-painted factory spoke wheels and continues into the interior
on the fuel tank, creating a coordinated presentation that suits
the car beautifully. The leatherback roof is in excellent condition
and looks virtually new. All exterior chrome and stainless steel
trim are intact and in excellent condition, contributing to the
car's overall attractive presentation. Power comes from the
original-style 200-cubic-inch inline four-cylinder engine, factory
rated at approximately 40 horsepower when new. The engine
compartment is exceptionally clean and well presented. During the
restoration, the engine was comprehensively rebuilt, including
connecting rods and pistons, with new Babbitt bearings poured and
fitted. The engine was also upgraded with Stellite exhaust valve
seats and stainless-steel valves, thoughtful improvements intended
to support dependable operation with today's unleaded gasoline.
Power is delivered through the traditional three-speed manual
transmission with floor-mounted shifter, providing the engaging,
hands-on driving experience that has made the Model A a perennial
favorite among vintage Ford enthusiasts. Additional mechanical and
period features include an exhaust manifold heater, which directs
warm air into the passenger compartment through a system controlled
by a damper inside the passenger compartment on the firewall. The
engine and undercarriage are clean, solid, and consistent with a
car that has received attentive care throughout its life. The
interior is exceptionally clean and features brown mohair
upholstery, carpeting, and a tan headliner, all in excellent
condition. Period-style privacy shades add an appealing touch of
authenticity and complete the vintage atmosphere of the passenger
compartment. The dashboard and window garnish moldings are is
finished in painted metal with custom-created faux mahogany wood
trim, providing the warmth of traditional woodgrain detailing while
retaining the underlying metal construction. The interior is
complemented by tasteful green accents that carry the exterior
pinstriping theme inside. Additional Equipment and features
include: proper plated vacuum windshield wiper, Westclox clock,
Tilt-out windshield, Exhaust manifold passenger-compartment heater,
Three-speed manual transmission with floor shift with Custom shift
knob, Emergency brake, Dual side-view mirrors, Brown mohair seating
and period-style privacy shades, Full-size rear-mounted spare tire
with matching spoke wheel and Rear brake light and reflector for
added visibility. These details enhance the car's usability while
preserving the distinctive character of an early-1930s Ford. The
Victoria rides on its factory-style spoke wheels finished in
complementary green, fitted with Firestone Gum-Dipped whitewall
tires in the original-style 4.75/5.00-19 size with period correct
tire stems and caps. The rear-mounted spare and matching wheel
complete the traditional Model A appearance. The undercarriage is
exceptionally clean and solid, reflecting the attention given to
the car during its frame-off restoration and subsequent
maintenance. The exterior brightwork remains intact and in
excellent condition, while the roof, interior, and mechanical
presentation make this a particularly appealing example for the
enthusiast who appreciates a vintage automobile that has been
preserved and enjoyed rather than simply displayed. This Victoria
starts, runs, drives, and handles as a 1931 Ford Model A should.
According to the owner, everything works, and the car is
comfortable cruising at approximately 40-50 mph under suitable
driving conditions. It offers an authentic prewar driving
experience, with the charm of a traditional Model A Ford, manual
transmission, upright seating position, and distinctive period
styling. The car has always been meticulously maintained and
garaged, and the current owner's long-term stewardship is reflected
in its overall condition. The modest imperfections in the lacquer
finish are consistent with a vintage automobile that has been
enjoyed over the years, while its excellent roof, interior, chrome,
stainless steel, and solid undercarriage make it an attractive,
usable collector car. The sale includes a clean Massachusetts title
in the owner's name, restoration receipts, and a photographic book
documenting the restoration project that began more than 40 years
ago. This historical material adds meaningful provenance and offers
insight into the care and effort invested in the car.Whether you
are an avid Model A enthusiast, a collector of unusual Ford body
styles, or simply looking for an attractive prewar automobile with
genuine character and a documented history, this 1931 Ford Victoria
Leatherback deserves serious consideration. This car is turnkey and
