The F-150 moniker debuted for the 1975 model year, as the name for
Ford's half ton pickup which slotted between the lighter duty F-100
and the heavier-duty F-250. Massive popularity soon ensued. The
Ford F-Series has been not only the best selling pickup for an
astounding 49 consecutive years. In total, more than 32 million
F150's were produced in 1990, more than 400,000 were sold.
For consignment, a 1990 Ford F150 XLT Lariat long bed pickup truck
showing 43,595 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This was the
era of the refined square body design, boxy by choice and still
considered utilitarian in philosophy of use.
Exterior
Dark Chestnut Metallic covers the steel panels of this pickup on
its uppers and lowers, sandwiching a tan band in the center
immediately rendering it period notable and now, classic. Flush,
square headlights lead the way and these flank a horizontal grille,
simple and utilitarian in its design, while large mirrors hang off
the sides of the doors. The bed walls have diamond steel plates for
strength and likely grip, while the bed itself shows some use which
you'll be able to view from the sliding rear window. 15-inch steel
wheels carry 235/75R15 tires on front and back. This well loved
truck shows some overall general patina, fading paint, chips,
blistering, scuffs, rust over the rear wheel arches, surface rust
on the roof along with some pitting. The chrome bumpers are in
great shape.
Interior
Refreshingly 80's/90's, the door panels combine a plaid cloth
insert, colored switchgear, molded plastic, and a carpeted lower
with integrated storage bin, both showing some light wear but in
overall good shape. The driver's side of the cloth bench has seen
better days as there are stains and a tear, but the remaining
stretch and tuck away armrest are in nice condition. A standard
steering wheel with some thumb controls fronts a simple gauge
cluster framed in simulated burlwood plastic which goes on to frame
the center box housing the A/C panel and AM/FM/Cassette radio. The
saddle dash pad has some cracks at the mounting points but is
otherwise intact. Gold carpet covers the floor with evidence of
work.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 5.0 liter V8 with electronic fuel injection and
185 horsepower. It's mated to an AOD 4-speed automatic transmission
routing power to the Ford 8.8" with 3.55 gears. The bay presents in
clean, serviceable condition.
Undercarriage
And speaking of work, underneath tells the story of a truck that
was driven, as advanced surface rust is prevalent but nothing
invasive or structural. A single exhaust runs through a stock style
muffler and exits behind the rear wheel. Power disc brakes are
found up front with power drums in the back and suspension consists
of coil springs with radius arms up front and leaf springs in the
back.
Drive-Ability
We hop up into this old Ford and put the column shifter in Drive
and head out to the test loop. We get a check engine light and the
truck occasionally stumbles and runs rough. In addition, the power
locks don't work and there are exhaust leaks and a rusted muffler.
All other functions on this brown box work as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here in our fair, rural community of Morgantown, PA, trucks of this
vintage still run around and do the work. But in more urban
environments, they are rare as the day is long, and this
patina-laden truck is beautifully vintage. It also has decent bones
that vie for restoration candidacy. That will be up to you and your
new F150!
