"The Anniversary 7up convertible was a special edition car for 1990
only. The car was originally developed as a promotional "give away"
for the 7up brand. The plan was to build 30 cars for the
competition, but after only 2 had been built, the whole promotional
scheme collapsed in a heap. In the end, Ford went ahead with
production, but for an entirely different reason. It became known
colloquially as the "7up Mustang." Mustangspecs.com
For consignment, a 1990 Ford Mustang LX convertible 7up edition
showing 69,703 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a
Delaware title exemption. The car comes with a Marti report showing
this is one of 4,103 limited edition 7up convertibles produced.
This one was first sold at Al Bennett Ford in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.
Exterior
There's no mistaking the Deep Emerald Green Metallic and white
canvas top and Ford loved the color so much, they wanted to make it
non exclusive to the 7-Up venture, causing a rift in the deal and
cutting short their plans to build 30,000 examples. Meanwhile, it
has all the cues of a five liter LX, one of the best known sleeper
performance cars of all time! The color contrast is striking and
accented by a white pinstripe on the waistline. It's a fairly
pedestrian design, but those in the know will spot those big,
straight exhaust pipes out the back and the three part tail lights
which provide some street cred. The paint is miles deep and
contrasted also by the 15-inch Turbine wheels are wrapped in
225/60R15 tires with a late 2021 date code. Imperfections include
some stains on the canvas top, inclusions on the front and rear
bumpers, peeling paint and surface rust on wheel arch, chips,
scuffs, and an area of rough surface.
Interior
True to the 7up logo, white is the color of choice on the inside
and the smooth door panels with black switchgear would surely find
favor with Robert Van Winkle as it does with us as both present
cleanly and have gray, pleated map pockets below. All seats,
including the front buckets and rear bench, are in great shape and
present cleanly, not an easy feat with white leather. Up front, an
air bag creates a large center in the black steering wheel, but the
thumb button still appears and it fronts a simple, analog dash that
takes us right back to 1990. Side pods introduce more switchgear
and the center stack has A/C dials and an AM/FM/Cassette player in
black that contrasts with the white dashboard. Ford's curve shafted
shifter rises from the console and then white plastic takes over to
create store indents and house the hand brake, all in very good
shape. Gray carpet covers the floor and the trunk is finished in
gray cloth panels and houses a special edition duffle bag.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a clean rendition of Ford's venerable 5.0 liter V8,
capable of 225 horsepower and tied to a T5 5-speed manual
transmission that routes power to the Ford 8.8" in back with 3.08
gears and Trac-Loc.
Undercarriage
Clean, driver quality conditions are found underneath where factory
headers lead to dual exhaust running through FlowMaster mufflers,
then exiting with the telltale tips. Power brakes are here as front
disc and rear drum and suspension consists of coil springs at both
ends with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
Gotta love the lightweight LX and its ability to plant the power to
the tarmac, as this one does, with fun stick on board to liven the
experience even more. The green paint glistens in the sun as we
make our way around and the little Foxbody does everything well. We
note the driver's power mirror does not work but all other
functions on this limited edition operate as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Instantly recognizable, this 7up version maintains its striking
green and white configuration and is a solid performer. The icing
on the cake is that the top comes down and now you're practically
riding bareback on this pony as you shift through the gears and
show off your bright white interior. LX Foxbodies are already
collectible; the limited edition of this one makes it more so.
