This 1952 Chevrolet 6400 has come a long way from its working-truck
beginnings. Originally built as a Chevy 2-ton truck with a dually
stake bed, this former heavy-duty hauler has been transformed into
a distinctive four-wheel-drive pickup, combining its unmistakable
Advance-Design cab with a later Chevrolet K10 chassis and small
block V8 power.
Chevrolet originally offered the 6400 as a heavy-duty
cab-and-chassis platform on a 161-inch wheelbase, allowing buyers
to fit bodies suited to their businesses. This 1952 Chevy 2-ton
truck began life with a stake bed before receiving its current
long-box stepside configuration, finished in Gloss Black with a
wooden bed floor.
Under the hood is a 350 cubic inch small block V8 with a
four-barrel carburetor, paired with a 700R4 four-speed automatic
transmission with overdrive. The 1986 Chevrolet K10 frame provides
part-time four-wheel drive, with GM 10-bolt front and rear
differentials. Power steering, power brakes with front discs, and a
later-model tilt steering column make this custom 4x4 Chevy easier
to handle than its original heavy-duty configuration.
Inside, a black cloth and vinyl bench seat maintains the
straightforward character of a vintage work truck. Dual exhaust
gives the 350 V8 a familiar sound, while 15-inch bullet-hole-style
steel wheels wrapped in Patagonia all-terrain tires complete the
rugged appearance.
With its towering vintage cab, long stepside bed, and
four-wheel-drive running gear, this Chevrolet 6400 offers a very
different take on the classic pickup. It keeps the personality of a
1950s commercial truck while adding V8 power, overdrive, and
four-wheel drive.
