"A convenient, modern car that carries three comfortably.
Especially popular for business and professional use. Interior
light over rear window. Like all close body coupes, the Coupe has
Clear-Vision Ventilation that is simplicity itself. One handle
raises and lowers windows, and opens a ventilating slot. Nothing to
block side view or hamper hand signals. The V-type windshield opens
for warm weather driving and there is also an adjustable cow
ventilator." From the 1938 brochure.
For consignment, a 1938 Ford 85 Deluxe 5 window coupe showing
11,705 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This bright blue
beauty is packing a 350ci V8 underneath its quintessentially 30's
lines.
Exterior
In profile, the pointed nose, forward canted C-pillar, and forward
flowing rear fender makes the car appear in motion when sitting
still and whether parked or moving, you can't miss the grabber-like
Blue paint in a color and two stage application that would have
seemed alien in 1938 but suits the car well in 2026. There's also
an encircling double pinstripe and some flourishes along the way.
The sweeping V-grille seems to give flight to the engine cover
louvers and the teardrop headlights seem to meld into the body
between those covers and the rounded fenders. In back, an epic
sloping decklid is flanked by diminutive tail lights over a chrome
bumper and on this car, two polished exhaust tips. 15-inch steel
wheels are painted to match, dressed in dog dish caps and beauty
rings, and wrapped in staggered width 70-series white wall tires.
Imperfectionsinclude scuffs, bubbling, cracking, chips, inclusions,
staining, edgewear, and scratches throughout.
Interior
Gray tweed with vinyl and embossed patterns adorn the clean door
panels, and the walls are awash in gray tweed, creating a
monochromatic palette inside. The split bench also wears it and is
uniquely configured with side supports on each side and an armrest
in between. In back, a small bench with seat belts is flanked by
speakers covered in, yes, gray tweed, and all of it presents
cleanly. Up front, a sport steering wheel is accompanied by a Lokar
floor mounted shifter while the dash is painted gray with pinstripe
flourishes and simple VDO gauges. There's A/C below and an AM/FM/CD
radio in the overhead console that does not veer from the material
of choice. Gray carpet covers the floor and there's a piece in the
otherwise unfinished but huge trunk.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 350ci V8 that according to our consignor, has
been bored .030 over. We confirm an Edelbrock 4-barrel and the
polished Chevrolet branded valve covers. A TH350 3-speed automatic
transmission is mounted behind it and power is routed to the 10
bolt rear axle. Power brakes and air conditioning are on board.
Undercarriage
Clean conditions are found underneath where you'll see a finned
rear differential cover and glasspack style mufflers on the dual
exhaust that terminate with polished tips out back. Power brakes
are disc/drum for front and back and suspension includes a Mustang
II front end and leaf springs in back. While on the lift, we do
note some rust in the pinch weld bottom of the doors.
Drive-Ability
Comfortable shaped seats are enhanced by comfortable tweed coverage
and the 350 comes to life with a hardy growl as we roll this blue
Deluxe onto the tarmac where it demonstrates good power, straight
tracking, and handling and braking that satisfy our stern
inspector. Noted shortfalls include the wipers and tachometer that
are not working but all other functions on this blue cruiser work
as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Great color for a street rod and as far as '38 Fords go, a favorite
body style for many people. This was the sports car and business
car of the lot and whether in Standard or Deluxe form, was touted
by Ford as ideal for "salesmen, or for men and women whose cars
play a part in the daily round of personal or business duties."
Today, it's just for fun. You in?
