For Sale: 1965 Volkswagen Notchback in San Diego, California

Vehicle Description

1965 Volkswagen Notchback — Supercharged, VW Trends Magazine Featured car:

The Vehicle has a clean title, registered, and insured

First purchased in 1987 with approximately 62,000 original miles. My father completed restoring the car in 1998, when the car had approximately 65,000. It was a 6 year project.

The project included the bodywork, wiring, interior, engine and a extensively modifying the engine compartment for the Supercharged engine.

The car was subsequently shown at numerous Southern California Volkswagen events (Familienfest VW Car Show, and California Volkswagen Jamboree) The 1ST place awards caught the attention of VW Trends Magazine, which featured the car in its April 1999 issue (page 28).

Engine/build details include:

1835cc engine, Deep-studded engine case with oversized case-saver inserts, 69mm forged, 8-dowel crankshaft, 1½-quart deep oil sump, Bergmann full-flow oil pump, Remote Fram PH8A spin-on oil filter, Bergmann 041 hemispherical-chambered cylinder heads, Gene Berg 009 distributor, KF Industries/Fageol Supercharger specifically machined and sized for this 1835cc engine, Approximately 8 lbs. boost at 5,000 RPM, Approximately 7:1 compression when not under boost and approximately 10.5:1 under boost, according to the build documentation, Two Weber progressive carburetors with mechanical secondaries, Custom supercharger adapter/transition plate, 100-amp GM alternator, Electric fuel pump, Modified lower blower pulley using a Type 4 bus squirrel-cage cooling fan, Stock Type III manual transmission. The supercharger can be removed and the carburetors returned to their original mounting positions.

Other Modification Details:

1967 Type III Squareback front end with front disc-brake upgrade, Two-stage master cylinder, Tire Size is 195/60R15 tires, The dash metal was color-matched to exterior, The Dash has no cracks., Refurbished door latches and window cranks, Original pop-out rear side-window still operate with original hardware, Sound, heat and vibration insulation added to both doors, Car rewired; my father's wiring schematics are included, Modern radio with four speakers, Restored interior front and rear seats, Shoulder-harness seat belts, Tachometer, boost gauge, cylinder-head-temperature gauge and oil-temperature gauge, Lowered approximately 3 notches in front and 2 notches in rear, Rear air shocks

The engine compartment was extensively re-engineered. An aluminum firewall separates the engine compartment from the rear seat. Much of the engine wiring is mounted at the firewall and designed to disconnect for easier engine removal. The engine floor was reshaped to resemble Type III tin, with separation between the upper and lower sections to direct exhaust heat beneath the engine. A Vanagon cooling fan between the firewall and rear seat extracts heat from the engine compartment.

The front trunk was restored but later modified as part of the cooling system. It will need cosmetic/interior finishing; templates for the pieces needed to redo it are included. This should make the restoration process faster.

The paint presents ok, it has aged through the years, as the color had more black added, the car is looking black, as there is no shine now. The paint would benefit from professional attention to bring back the shine. There are some minor RUST blisters on the passenger door. The RUST is on the hinged side of the door down on the lower part. (the only RUST I have found on the car).

From approximately 2012 until sometime in 2024, my father used the car as a daily driver. It was driven much less from 2024 until his passing in 2026. I have since have it running and have been driving it just in the neighborhood to keep the battery charged, the car shows approximately 76,000 miles.
