I've owned a lot of things in my life. Tractors, combines, a couple
of stubborn mules, and more pickup trucks than I care to count.
Most of them came and went. Some wore out, some got traded, and a
few probably should've been hauled off to the scrapyard long before
they were. But there was one machine I just couldn't bring myself
to part with. My old 1976 International Scout II.
Now, I didn't buy that Scout to impress anybody. I bought it
because I needed something that could get me down a muddy two
track, through a snowdrift, and back home again without making a
fuss about it. And for decades, that's exactly what it did.
That old 304 V8 and four speed manual transmission hauled me
through just about everything Mother Nature could throw at a man.
Spring planting, fall harvest, January mornings so cold the cows
looked miserable. Didn't matter. Turn the key, give her a little
gas, grab a gear, and get to work.
Over the years, the paint faded, the seats got tired, and the old
girl started showing her age. Come to think of it, so did I. But
every time somebody asked if I'd sell her, I gave them the same
answer. "Not a chance."
Then one winter, after the crops were in and I had a little more
time to think than was probably good for me, I decided it was time
to give that Scout the attention she'd earned.
And I wasn't about to do it halfway.
We went through that old International and brought her back to the
kind of condition she deserved. A proper restoration, done with
care, patience, and the understanding that some things are worth
doing right the first time. The bodywork, the finish, the details,
all of it came together beautifully. Underneath, she's still got
that trusty 304 cubic inch V8, backed by a four speed manual that
reminds you driving ought to involve more than pushing a button.
Power steering makes her a whole lot easier to handle than some of
the equipment I've spent my life wrestling around, and front disc
brakes give a man a little more confidence when it's time to bring
her to a stop.
I'll tell you something funny. When I first bought that Scout, it
was just a tool. Something to get the job done. Never figured I'd
spend decades hanging on to it, let alone restore it to this level.
But somewhere between hauling fence posts, chasing cattle, and
driving home with the windows down after a long day in the fields,
that old International became part of the family.
And now? Well, she's probably cleaner than she's ever been in her
life. Too nice to throw a muddy pair of boots in the back, though I
reckon she'd forgive me if I did.
They don't build them like this anymore. No touchscreens, no fancy
computers, and no little warning light telling you to keep your
hands on the steering wheel. Just American iron, a good V8, four
gears, and enough character to fill a barn.
I suppose someday somebody else will own this Scout. They'll turn
that key, hear that 304 come to life, and maybe wonder what kind of
stories an old truck like this could tell.
Lord knows she's got plenty.
And if you ask me, the best ones were never written down. They were
earned one muddy mile at a time.
