1978 Corvette Limited Edition Indianapolis Pace Car
We are excited to feature a lovely 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Limited
Edition Coupe Pace Car which was the first Corvette to serve as the
Indianapolis 500 pace car, marking the model's 25th anniversary and
coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Corvette. The pace car,
which featured a black over silver paint scheme with a red
pinstripe, was driven by 1960 Indy 500 winner Jim Rathmann.
Key Points of the 1978 Corvette Indy 500 Pace Car:
• First Corvette Pace Car:This was the first time a Corvette served
as the pace car for the Indianapolis 500, despite the
model's long history.
• 25th Anniversary:The 1978 Corvette was chosen to pace the race in
part because it was the 25th anniversary of the
Corvette.
• Two-Tone Paint:The pace car featured a distinctive two-tone black
over silver paint job with a red pinstripe, a color scheme
that was also seen on the Silver Anniversary Corvette.
