Rare Mercedes-Benz 300b Adenauer Cabriolet
When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 300 at the 1951 Frankfurt Motor Show, the brand demonstrated that it had fully returned to the absolute pinnacle of the automotive world following the war. The large, stately 300 became the flagship model from Stuttgart and the preferred car of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, who drove one for years. This earned the model the nickname still used today: the "Adenauer." Alongside the sedan, the Cabriolet D was introduced—a four-door convertible that was an exclusive rarity from the very start. Only 642 cabriolets were built across all Adenauer versions, and within the 300 b series (introduced in 1954), just 146 units left the factory. The 300 b featured increased power, larger brakes, and vent windows in the front doors. Beneath the long hood of this 1955 300 b lies a 3.0-liter inline-six engine with an overhead camshaft, mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. The maintenance history for this specific car is available, as are the original owner's manuals—a wonderful bonus for any enthusiast.
The deep black paintwork perfectly complements the character of this "Adenauer," accentuating the imposing, sweeping lines of the long fenders and the powerful front end. The chrome grille featuring the signature hood-mounted star, the chrome bumpers, the auxiliary front lights, and the chrome trim along the flanks lend the car a stylish, elegant appearance. Whitewall tires paired with black hubcaps and chrome stars complete the classic look. With the top up, the black soft top—featuring chrome landau bars—gives the car the stately profile of a coupé, while the tonneau cover with red piping ensures a polished appearance even when the top is down. Stepping into the interior is a delight: red leather bench seats with beautiful vertical stitching, matching red door panels, and dark red carpeting, all complemented by a glossy wood dashboard and wood window trim. The large steering wheel with its chrome horn ring and the classic radio complete the 1950s atmosphere. The contrast between the sleek black paintwork and the warm red interior is spectacular, giving this convertible a timeless, luxurious appeal. Lower the top, take three passengers along, and enjoy one of the most remarkable Mercedes-Benz models ever built.
