"The Pontiac Fiero was practically created to be the perfect base
for a mid engine replica build, and there are a few key reasons
enthusiasts love to use it. The small American sports car offers a
few things that very few other vehicles offer, especially at the
price point. Here's what makes the Fiero a prime choice for replica
builders: Mid engine layout, space frame with bolt on body panels,
cheap, available and with vast aftermarket support, wheelbase
matches many exotics surprisingly well, and legal and practical
advantage, (i.e. Fiero VIN)." Ridereverie.com
For consignment, a 1988 Pontiac Fiero ASPP Ford GT replica showing
5,260 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a West Virginia
title exemption. This car was actually raced at Summit Point
raceway a few times and was produced by Auto Sports Performance
Products of Tempe, Arizona.
Exterior
Unlike other replicas based on a Fiero, there's very little
exterior Fiero presence on this one and in fact, with the nice
panels attached, it fits somewhere between Fiero and GT in size. It
presents a racy exterior composed of Wimbledon White with blue
taped stripes on the hood and rockers, smooth panels, air intakes
on the hood along with NACA ducts, quarter panel intakes and an
integrated spoiler rising as if flipping off competitors over heat
expelling louvers. It's here you'll find twin, center exit exhaust
and they are much bigger than any Fiero ever owned from the
factory. 16-inch basketweave wheels with knock off caps hold
staggered, ZR rated tires and they have deep sidewall cracks and
will need immediate replacement. Other imperfections include flex
cracks, cracking, fading and marring of blue stripes, paint run,
scuffs, scratches, chin scrape, and rock chips.
Interior
Fiero's pedestrian configuration has been replaced on the door
panels with a ribbed pattern in black vinyl and both doors are in
nice shape with some separation near the passenger handle. Black
leather bucket seats are convincing upgrades especially as wrapped
by racing harnesses. Theyflank the Fiero broad center console, here
with a T-shaped shifter with carbon fiber handle and leather boot.
A three spoke steering wheel fronts what our consignor states is an
authentic GT 40 dash with correct gauge layout and it's a smart
looking set up in satin black and Autometer units. The Fiero A/C
panel is in place along with an upgraded AM/FM/CD radio with
satellite capabilities and a remote. Ford branded rubber mats cover
black carpet below and the headliner also contributes to the black
palette and is in nice condition.
Drivetrain
The mid mounted GM engine has been painted Ford blue and gained a
Ford oval, but under the disguise is a 2.8 liter V6 rated at 165
horsepower and now wearing some free breathing headers. It's backed
by the TH125C 3-speed automatic transmission that keeps power out
back through 3.33 gears. Power brakes and air conditioning are on
board and the bay is bridged by a strut tower brace.
Undercarriage
Big chrome tips head off our tour of the relatively clean underside
where some surface rust is present but dry conditions are found. A
stock style muffler is in place, emitting two black tailpipes
towards the shiny termination. Power brakes are on board as front
disc and rear drums and our consignor states the master cylinder,
brake booster and stainless lines are newer. The fully independent
suspension consists of double wishbone with coil springs up front
and Macpheson struts in back.
Drive-Ability
While we were unable to lap the car due to the deteriorated tires,
we did start it up to test functionality. The engine idles and
sounds great. We note the A/C, wipers and reverse lights are not
working but all other functions while stationary work as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Other than overall size, the exterior treatment is a faithful
replication of the GT and we're sure if you saw this going the
opposite direction in traffic, your head would instantly turn and
at speed, you might not be able to distinguish it from the real
deal. In preparation, we'll provide you with the tire sizes so you
can get started: 225/60R16 up front and 255/50R16 in the rear.
