2010 marked the final year for the Pontiac Motor Division at GM and
eight years earlier, the last Trans Am rolled off the assembly
line, much to the chagrin of Firebird loyalists throughout North
America. But the car that came in like a lion, left like a lion
harboring 325 horsepower under the hood with the LS series V8. In
2001, more than 20,000 Firebirds were built.
For consignment, a 2001 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am convertible with
a title verified 77,402 actual miles. According to our consignor,
the car spent most of its life out west and has a newer top, door
panels, and seat covers.
Exterior
There's no hiding the aggressive front end of this car, no matter
what color paint adorns it, but Navy Blue Metallic is a great
choice. It is one of the great faces, with inset marker lights
molded into the corners, fog lights deep within two tunnels, and
then the intake set up of twin scoops to capture all of the air the
moving car can inhale. What air it misses, rides over a smooth
hood, finding its way to a steeply raked windshield where it
continues over the dark blue canvas top and along the ironing
board-like rear wing. The aggressive face gives way to a more
rounded tail with curved plexiglass that covers the red lenses,
black hexagons creating a contrast with the blue bumper cover and a
rear valance that provides two tunnels for the exhaust, in this
case, oval tips. 17-inch chrome wheels carry 40 series tires with a
mid 2023 date code. Imperfections include general overall dullness
to the paint, failing clear coat and oxidized surfaces, chips,
scuffs, crazing, curb rash, heavy chin scrapes and some damage, and
areas of orange peel.
Interior
Standard Ebony door panels with textured plastic and gray buttons
show some minor wear but are overall good. Black leather bucket
seats are sports car focused and have prominent side bolsters and
the accordion style flex zone used in Trans Ams since the late
1980's, and both seats plus the rear 2+2 seats look great. We do
note the front seat belt guides are gone. The beefy black steering
wheel is sculpted for good grip and houses gray buttons for radio
control. A standard dash continues the monochromatic interior, and
the center stack features large, gray plastic buttons and knobs for
radio and climate controls while a leather handled shifter is in
the center console. Picking up the dash pad cover reveals cracks,
wear, and panel separation underneath. Low pile charcoal carpet is
in good shape and the rear cargo area is lined with gray cloth
panels and has a deep well for gym bag and grocery storage. It also
holds a 12 disc changer.
Drivetrain
Under the hood and set back to the firewall is the potent 5.7 liter
LS1 V8 rated at a healthy 310 horsepower and set into motion here
by a T56 6-speed manual transmission. Power is routed to the 10
bolt axle with 3.42 gears and Positraction. The bay presents
cleanly.
Undercarriage
Driver quality here with typical surface rust on heavy metal
components while dry conditions prevail. Dual exhaust starts at
headers which come together and the single pipe finds a FlowMaster
muffler which emits two tailpipes. Suspension onboard includes coil
springs up front and coil springs with a torque arm in the
back. We're in the modern age with this performance car, so power
disc brakes are the only option to slow this bird down, and they're
at all four wheels.
Drive-Ability
What has all the fun of a Corvette with two extra seats? A Trans
Am, of course! The V8 starts right up, and we head out onto the
tarmac where the T/A does what T/A's do, handle well, go fast, and
turn on a dime. We are running with a check engine light and codes
are in the photographs. We also note the steering column is loose,
the driver's power seat and power mirror are not working, and the
front turn signals are inoperable. All other functions operate as
they should on this convertible bird. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Sammy Hagar knew what he was talking about when he wrote, "Trans
Am, highway wonderland!" Here's one that could use some TLC but
also comes to you with fresh tires, a very nice top and a clean
engine bay. Future collectible? How about collectible right now
Like Sammy sings, "Right now, catch that magic moment, do it right
here and now!"
