1960 Ford F-100 Pickup - Southern California Survivor with
Bonneville History
This is one of those trucks that you simply cannot recreate.
This 1960 Ford F-100 was purchased new from a Ford dealership in
Southern California and remained with its original owner until just
the last few years. It spent essentially its entire life in
Southern California, and the dry climate has helped preserve it
remarkably well both top and bottom.
What makes this F-100 particularly special is its history.
During its early years, the truck made annual trips to the
Bonneville Salt Flats, where it was used as a push and support
truck during the Bonneville speed trials. According to the original
owner, he would install a camper on the back, drive the truck from
Southern California to Bonneville, remove the camper once he
arrived, and then put the Ford to work helping racers at the
track.
That history is not just a story passed down through the years. In
the November 1964 issue of Hot Rod Magazine, this very truck can be
seen in a large two-page color photograph at Bonneville, sitting in
the staging lanes preparing to push off another racer. It is a
fantastic piece of period documentation that connects this old Ford
directly to one of the greatest eras in American hot-rodding
history.
Just as important, this truck has never been restored.
What you see today is genuine Southern California patina earned
over more than six decades. The paint, finish, and overall
appearance tell the story of a truck that was used, enjoyed, cared
for, and preserved by the same owner for most of its life. There is
no artificial patina here and no attempt to make something new look
old. This is the real thing.
The second owner freshened the interior with a restored seat cover
and headliner, and there have been a few minor additions over the
years, but the character and originality of the truck remain very
much intact.
Under the hood is its original 292 cubic-inch V8, now fitted with a
Holley carburetor, backed by the factory 3-speed manual
transmission. It runs and drives great and has the honest
mechanical feel you would expect from a well-preserved vintage
Ford.
The body and underside are exceptionally rust-free, showing
primarily the light surface color and aging you would expect from a
lifelong Southern California truck. Newer radial tires make it
enjoyable to drive, while the Moon hubcaps give it just the right
period salt-flat look.
This is not a shiny restored show truck, and that is exactly what
makes it so special. It is an authentic survivor with real history,
tremendous character, and a documented connection to Bonneville
during the golden age of hot rodding.
If you appreciate original vehicles, genuine patina, and the kind
of history that cannot be duplicated, this 1960 Ford F-100 is a
very special truck. Sixty-six years of Southern California
sunshine, Bonneville memories, and careful ownership have created
something that restoration simply cannot reproduce.
