"Corvette performance has been improved with a dual snorkel air
cleaner and new low restriction exhaust system and mufflers on the
available L82 350ci V8 engine. The transverse rear leaf spring in
the independent rear suspension has been widened to reduce stress.
Two new transmissions were introduced in the 1978 Corvette. A new 4
speed manual transmission is standard. A new automatic transmission
is available for the L82 350ci. V8 engine. To celebrate the 25th
anniversary of the Corvette, the Silver Anniversary emblems are
mounted on the nose and rear deck." Thx corvettemuseum.org
For consignment, a 1978 Chevrolet Corvette coupe with 169 miles on
the digital odometer, but the true miles are unknown. Our consignor
states the engine, a 383ci V8 stroker, has about 300 miles on
it.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
Like a gleaming glass of Bordeaux, Dark Red Metallic coats the
gentle hills and valleys of the Corvette's body like a wet blanket.
No chrome bumpers or much stainless trim to distract from the
monochromatic coverage, but emblems, callouts and rocker trim are
evident through contrast over the flowing red fiberglass. The coke
bottle profile is unobstructed by door handles as they are
positioned on the top side of the door and flush, while the
requisite fender vent is molded seamlessly into the sides. 15-inch
aluminum slot wheels are in great shape and on this car, the slots
have been painted to match. 60 series tires with slightly staggered
width give the car a solid stance. Imperfections include areas of
dullness and checking, inclusions throughout, scuffs, an etched
pattern on the T-tops, chips, bubbling, scratches, cracks, and rock
chips.
Interior
If you were expecting black, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find
Oyster on the interior that contrasts nicely, beginning on the door
panels that are intact but do show some soiling, as Oyster tends to
do. The bucket seats are covered in thick sheepskins while the
carpet takes on a gray tone with red mats on top for protection.
Oyster leather covers the steering wheel which is in great shape
and fronts gauges that have been digitized, including those in the
aeronautical cluster in the center stack. An AM/FM/Cassette radio
falls beneath the cluster and it's back to the 70's for the A/C
control panel with sliding levers and old school GM font. Showing a
touch of age is the center console featuring the chrome ball
shifter and H-pattern shift diagram. The visors are slightly
weathered and the gray carpet in the cargo area comes to us in
various shades.
Drivetrain
In the busy bay is a clean stroker V8 which 383ci and puts out 451
horsepower. It's a Blueprint crate engine with aluminum heads and a
Holley 4-barrel carburetor. Behind it, a T10 4-speed manual sending
power to the rear axle where our consignor states 3.70 gears reside
with Positraction. This Vette is equipped with power steering,
power brakes and air conditioning.
Undercarriage
Tips protrude at the end of the clean underside terminating the
dual exhaust which runs through a set of stock style mufflers after
traversing through a front cross rail. There is no catalytic
converter on board. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and
suspension consists of coil springs in front and half shafts,
lateral struts, control arms, and transverse leaf springs out back.
The bottom is dry and rust free.
Drive-Ability
The soft covered seats hug you like an Afghan throw as your pilot
this dark red sports car around the test loop. On 23 year old
tires, we won't be flogging it today, but there's good power
underfoot, the potential of amazing handling, and brakes on demand.
We note the heater blower and wipers don't work but all other
functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
If you've been waiting for the right C3 to come along, one you
could drive and show with confidence, this '78 is of the right
vintage. It's a virtually turnkey, clean and well sorted example
that is ready to be enjoyed. Pop the tops and hold on to your hat,
this is an E-ticket ride to fun!
