The name came from the French city of Le Mans, the site of the 24
Hours of Le Mans, the world's oldest active sports car endurance
race that began in 1923. Originally a trim upgrade package based on
the Tempest, the LeMans became a separate model in 1963. 1969 was
part of the third generation, introduced in 1968 and produced
through 1972. Of the 104,000 Tempest/Lemans produced in 1969, just
5,676 were convertibles.
For consignment, a 1969 Pontiac Lemans convertible showing 124,414
miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car appears in the
color it left the Baltimore plant with and also the engine it drove
off in, the numbers matching 350ci V8. Owned by our consignor for
26 years, this pampered Pontiac has been garaged and maintained as
a show car.
Exterior
Warwick Blue is presented in two stage form, gleaming and fronted
by Pontiac's distinctive nose, seen across the line in '69, lined
with robust chrome which becomes part of the bumper that frames the
grille; that grille bends to accompany the protruding beak
begetting a hood bulge that bisects twin nostrils up top. The
handsome profile includes a gently undulating but mostly straight
shoulder line, topped by a new white canvas top and finished by a
sweeping decklid, arrowhead side markers, and long overhang.
14-inch Pontiac Rally II wheels are on board with G70-14 tires that
have a late 2021 date code. A simple design is now fully classic in
back with some substantial dual exhaust tips and a flawless chrome
bumper. Imperfections include some chips, inclusions, cracking
paint, bubbling on the deck filler panel, base of door and at
rocker trim, rock spray on the rocker trim and rear panels.
Interior
Also retaining its original interior and color, Parchment vinyl is
artfully arranged on the door panel with trim lines that create
geometric patterns around the hardware and model plate. Similar
things happen on the front bucket seats with the use of stitch
pattern under a broad headrest, all in very nice condition along
with the rear bench with seatbelts for three and ashtrays for the
end occupants. The cockpit begins with a simple but elegant
steering wheel, brown textured plastic and three spokes, leading to
a triple gauge instrument cluster up front that includes the
speedometer and a clock. Woodgrain applique covers the lower dash
where the AM/FM radio is housed and the center continues the warm
woodgrain trim, home to the shifter and it all is in great shape.
Black loop carpet is on the floor and the trunk is clean, dressed
by a fitted vinyl mat.
Drivetrain
Looking original and clean is indeed the numbers matching 350ci L30
V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and 265 horsepower. It's mated to a
TH400 3-speed automatic transmission routing power to the 10 bolt
rear axle. Power brakes, power steering, and air conditioning are
on board.
Undercarriage
Generally clean driver quality is found underneath where we note
one, well done floor patch. The dual exhaust runs through stock
style but different mufflers on its way to the chrome tipped exit
while power drum brakes are supplied to all four wheels. Suspension
includes coil springs front and rear with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
The factory engine comes to life without a hiccup and sets us on
our way, providing good power on the test loop, straight tracking,
nice handling, and an all around pleasant experience in this time
capsule of a car. We note the heater blower is not working and
there's some shudder when we put her in reverse. Beyond that, all
functions operate as they should on this blue beauty. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
Because they were marketed more as commuters than performance cars,
LeMans have flown under the radar especially given the small number
that survived daily use. This is a fine example of Pontiac's
pedestrian offering, here with nostrils behind the chrome bumper
and showy dual exhaust sandwiching a lovely exterior spec.
