"Lean, clean, long, low, with the power and performance to match
its sporty looks. Last year, this car demonstrated emphatically its
sales appeal. This year, Camaro comes on even stronger with
sensible styling refinements inside and out. It's your ticket to
even bigger conquest sales in the economy sports car market.
Ex-sell-erate in '68 with Camaro!" From the 1968 Chevrolet Dealer
Training film.
For consignment, a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro hardtop with a title
verified 98,589 actual miles. According to our consignor, the built
327ci V8 under the hood now puts out between 450 and 500
horsepower.
Exterior
Code JJ is still intact and it's Rally Green Metallic, now
featuring two stage application, glimmering and shimmering under
our photo booth lights. Two color tail lights are accentuated by
the flat black panel in back while modern headlight conversions
flank the black, eggcrate grille over a reflective chrome bumper. A
cowl hood creates a raise up front and drifts back over the cowl to
take full advantage of air swept off the windshield. Perched on
15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels, the rubber on board are staggered
width 60 series tires with letters out and in profile, the car has
an aggressive, high stance. Imperfections include dull areas and
inclusions on horizontal surfaces, chips, blistering in the drip
rail, surface rust in the window channel, spots of rust and
blistering on and around rocker panel, clear runs, and cracking
paint in a few places.
Interior
Standard black vinyl door panels are handsome and clean and lead to
houndstooth inserts on the bucket seats and the rear bench and all
are in fantastic condition. Up front, we have a wood framed
steering wheel ahead of an instrument cluster dominated by a
speedometer and tachometer with a touch of patina and a simulated
wood framed center stack that carries the AM/FM radio and vent
panel. Below that is the console gauge package of four square
meters canted upward for easy viewing. The iconic horseshoe shifter
occupies the center console, straddled over the gear indicator
panel in classic light green lettering. Black loop carpet covers
the floor while speakers are integrated into the plastic kick
panels and Camaro branded mats dress things up. The black headliner
is intact and the trunk is barren.
Drivetrain
Topped by a polished Offenhauser intake is a 327ci V8 that our
consignor states has been rebuilt and has 11-1 compression. There
are aluminum heads on board and two 4-barrel Holley carburetors.
Transferring the power is a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission
routing power to the 10 bolt rear axle with a consignor stated 3.73
gearing. Headers, power brakes and power steering are on board and
the bay presents cleanly with a polished fan shroud and valve
covers. We note the wiring from the battery to the alternator is
melted, leaving wires exposed.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with some surface rust and fluid noted on the rear
differential and transmission pan. Dual exhaust carry FlowMaster
mufflers on its way to the back and power brakes are supplied as
front disc and rear drum. Suspension is the standard set up of coil
springs in front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
Plenty of power and a satisfying exhaust note tops our list of
positive attributes to this green machine on the test loop. We note
the horn, front turn signals and heater blower are not working and
the dome light occasionally stays on. Beyond these things, all
functions work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
1968 Camaros might make the top ten list of "most consistent
sellers" here at Classic Auto Mall and remain a favorite of a large
number of car people. This is a nicely done example in a great
original color and sporting a unique intake from a significant race
equipment manufacturer. Some nice boxes checked here; all you need
to do is sign on the dotted line!
