Fully restored, this 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 is a highly
desirable example of one of America's most iconic performance cars.
One of only 1,020 GT500 fastbacks produced for the 1968 model year,
this Shelby was assembled at Ford's Metuchen, New Jersey factory on
January 15, 1968. The car is finished in its distinctive Highland
Green with GT500 side stripes, giving it the unmistakable
appearance that has made the 1968 Shelby Mustang such a
sought-after collector automobile.
The 1968 Shelby GT500 was designed with aggressive styling and a
number of unique performance-oriented features that distinguished
it from the standard Mustang. This example retains the signature
Shelby appointments, including the distinctive ducktail rear
spoiler, fender extensions, sail-panel air scoops, quarter-panel
air scoops, and fiberglass ventilated hood with ram-air scoop. The
combination of the Highland Green exterior, GT500 side stripes, and
muscular Shelby bodywork gives the car an unmistakable presence
from every angle.
Under the hood is a 428ci V8, factory equipped with a four-barrel
Holley carburetor and rated at 360 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of
torque. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed
automatic transmission and a 3.50 rear axle ratio, providing the
strong acceleration and effortless cruising characteristics
expected from a big-block Shelby. This particular GT500 was
originally ordered with the desirable Extra Cooling Package, adding
further significance to its documented factory configuration. The
428ci engine was rebuilt as part of the car's comprehensive
restoration.
The Shelby's performance-oriented chassis features the upgraded
suspension equipment associated with the GT500, including
heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front, along with
heavy-duty leaf springs in the rear. Power steering provides easier
handling while retaining the character of a classic American
performance car, and stopping power comes from power-assisted front
disc brakes with rear drums. The car sits on aluminum 10-spoke
15-inch wheels fitted with Shelby Cobra center caps and Goodyear
Speedway tires measuring E70-15, completing the period-correct
Shelby appearance.
Inside, the GT500 features its factory-specified black knitted
Decor bucket seats, along with the Visibility and Interior Decor
Groups and a Sport Deck rear seat. Additional equipment includes a
tilt-away steering column, AM radio, tachometer, and trip odometer.
The woodgrain steering wheel fronts a classic instrument cluster
featuring a 140-mph speedometer and 8,000-rpm tachometer, along
with gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and
amperage. The interior combines the distinctive styling of a
late-1960s Shelby with the instrumentation and features expected
from a high-performance automobile of the era.
Around 2015, this Shelby underwent a comprehensive restoration by
Leadfoot Muscle Cars in Holland, Michigan, with more than $140,000
invested in the project. The restoration included complete
disassembly of the vehicle, metal repairs, repainting, rebuilding
the engine, and replacing trim items. The substantial scope of the
restoration and investment went well beyond a simple cosmetic
refurbishment, addressing the car's body, mechanical components,
finish, and trim to bring this GT500 back to an exceptional
standard.
A Deluxe Marti Report, which documents the vehicle's original
factory configuration, is included with the car. With its
documented history, extensive restoration, desirable factory
specifications, and iconic Shelby styling, this 1968 GT500 is a
distinctive example of one of America's most legendary performance
cars and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner. For additional
