1972 Chevrolet C10 Custom Deluxe Stepside Short Bed Pickup
In 1973, the third generation Chevrolet, (and GMC), trucks were
introduced as part of the "Rounded Line" and were designed, in part
with the use of a wind tunnel. Interestingly, they are referred to
in a colloquial way today as "square bodies". But it's the second
generation known as the "Action Line" where right angles appear
with almost as much prominence on the vehicles. In either case and
regardless of design differences, both are considered sought after
classics today.
For consignment, a 1972 Chevrolet C10 Custom Deluxe stepside short
bed pickup showing 1,290 miles, but the true miles are unknown.
Custom Deluxe was a mid level trim package geared more for the
working man who didn't need a fancy interior or extraneous exterior
adornments. This one's packing a Blueprint crate engine and
aluminum heads.
Exterior
The standard white cab configuration is gone and in its place, a
full coating of two stage Highlighter Yellow paint which, as the
name implies, gets your attention! It's hunkered down over 20-inch
US Mag wheels with argent spokes, polished rims, and staggered
width tires. The nose forward front end features the unmistakable
face with a center band that takes in the marker lights between
black, egg crate grilles. In back, Chevrolet is outlined in dark
paint on the tailgate, itself flanked by external blue dot tail
lights. A solid rear window overlooks that black walled bed with
weathered wood and patina laden rails, usable as is or open to
restoration with the wood color of your choosing. Imperfections
include some surface rust bubbling and spots especially under the
rockers, rough surfaces at a seams, blistering, cracking, and chips
about, scuffs, scratches, and remnant caps where trailer mirrors
would have been mounted,
Interior
Black plastic door cards framed in yellow and displaying the
Sheridan scroll are both attractive and clean with the exception of
the passenger armrest which shows age. A modern split bench covered
in black Rough Country toppers have seat mounted shoulder belts and
a center fold up console adds a third seat in a pinch. A chrome hot
rod steering wheel front a clean dash that combines the vintage
configuration with some added gauges under the center stack. Vent
controls and a Sparkomatic AM/FM/Cassette player occupy the center
along with some added toggles and indicator lights. Our black dash
pad shows some cracks and age and the rubberized coating on the
floor remains in good shape. Up top, the glossy yellow paint gleams
like sunshine and a small fan has been added.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a clean and a bit showy 350ci Blueprint crate
engine with Blueprint aluminum heads, a Blueprint intake, and a
Holley 4-barrel carburetor making a dyno proven 390.7 horsepower.
It's backed by a rebuilt 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission that
our consignor states has less than 500 miles, sending power to the
12 bolt rear axle. The truck has headers, power brakes and power
steering. We note an aluminum radiator as well.
Undercarriage
Not as showy but certainly clean underneath with some surface rust,
one spot of blistering, and some flaking rust on the inner rockers.
We also note some blistering on the door bottoms and riveted
repairs in the jamb. Dual exhaust runs through Turbo mufflers and
then goes sideways to exit under each stepside platform. Coil
springs are front and rear with trailing arms in back and brakes
equipped with newer pads, rotors and lines according to our
consignor, are supplied as front disc and rear drum, power
operated.
Drive-Ability
Nothing like a stout little classic truck and this performance
oriented short bed does the trick! On the tarmac, it provides good
power, straight tracking, and with a low center of gravity, some
excellent handling. We noticed the radio, horn, and reverse lights
are not working but all other functions including the abundance of
gauges, work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
What's not to love here? A great color, a built engine, and a
clean, comfortable interior sets the pace for this Highlight Yellow
Custom Deluxe. Let's not forget about the "ventiplane" frames,
those triangular corner windows that allow you to flick your
cigarette or simply get some air circulation, vintage style!
