The word Cutlass is defined as a short curvy one edged sword that
was used by sailors. The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was the best
selling car in Olds history. With its clean lines and numerous
model offerings, it is clear to see why. The "4-4-2" name,
(pronounced "Four-four-two"), derives from the original car's four
barrel carburetor, four speed manual transmission, and dual
exhausts. Some maintain that the '2' indicated positive traction
rear differential. It was originally written "4-4-2".
For consignment, a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 hardtop showing 90,477
miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption.
Our consignor states there are 10,000-15,0000 miles since the
engine build which generates a stated 550 horsepower. The numbers
matching transmission now has a 2400rpm TCI converter.
Exterior
Named for Robin Hood's home, Sherwood Green Metallic was selected
and now covers this car in two stage beauty. It is, of course,
accented by black on the W25 twin raised hood scoops, and adorned
with bolt 442 call outs on every side, including the characteristic
Oldsmobile nose. Pairings are common on the car and include twin
headlights on each side, two inset hood pins, the rectangular hood
scoops, a split grille with mirror image sides, sport mirrors color
keyed to the body, tail lights that have twin vertical bars, and
twin trumpet exhaust tips. A singular wing on the decklid and
Cragar Street Stars are on all four corners. Imperfections include
some surface rust spots on those chrome wheels, gap issues with the
hood, waviness of the hood, general inclusions, chips, underspray
on the rockers, and rock spray on the rear panels.
Interior
Dark Green vinyl colors the interior, and it starts with handsome
door panels accentuated by simulated burl wood trim and a faded
carpeted lower, all with nice trim. The front bucket seats utilize
the green vinyl in an elegant design with button backs and tuck and
roll patterning over smooth panels and all seats including the rear
bench are in fantastic condition. An X is formed by the spokes of
the sport steering wheel and it leads to a very simple gauge
cluster embedded on burl wood wood grain trim and includes a clock
in the center of the tachometer is a clever bit of dual purpose
design. Burl wood applique covers the lower dash as well which
houses the climate controls and the AM/FM/CD radio and four gauges
have been added under the dash for more precise engine monitoring.
In the center console, a ball handled shifter surrounded by even
more burl wood design. Green loop carpet is on the floor protected
by rubber mats and the headliner is in very good condition. Our
trunk has a protective vinyl mat which appears to have trapped some
moisture causing surface rust spots on the stamped steel floor.
Drivetrain
Finned valve covers highlight the visuals of the 455ci V8 under the
hood. Our consignor states this was built by Mondello and we can
confirm it has Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, Edelbrock Performer
455 intake, and an Edelbrock 850cfm 4-barrel carburetor. Our
consignor states this recipe puts out 550 horsepower. It's mated to
its numbers matching TH400 3-speed automatic transmission with a
2400rpm TCI converter sending power to the 12 bolt rear axle with
3.42 gears and Positraction. The bay is clean and shows headers,
power brakes, power steering and air conditioning.
Undercarriage
Fins also highlight the underside as they're seen on the W27 rear
differential cover amongst the generally clean underside with
minimal surface rust and only residual oil. The dual exhaust run
through Hooker Aerochamber mufflers on their way to the distinctive
polished tips and coil spring suspension is utilized front and rear
with a 4 link in back. Brakes include power discs in the front and
power drums in the back.
Drive-Ability
A deep muscular exhaust note is expelled upon start up and we roll
this green machine onto the test loop. There's gobs of power here
but we also note a slight miss in the engine. The ride and test are
otherwise uneventful as the car goes through its paces without
issue. Our checklist includes the clock, A/C, and heater blower
high speed not working, but all other functions operate as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
As one of the most collectible A-bodies to ever leave a GM assembly
plant, the 442 is a highly prized possession and this is a nice
example with some tasteful mods and a clean appearance top and
bottom.
